v8 diesel conversion

Post by fatassgq »

Ok, the time is fast approaching to swap my tired 4.2diesel for a v8. I had my heart set on a petrol for quite some time but I am now thinking that it would be the wrong and more expensive + more headaches way to go.
I think a 6.2 or 6.5 might be the best especially as my truck is already a diesel. I am not sure on what to expect as far as PRICE FOR A FULLY REBUILT diesel. Can anyone help??? I also want to know about transmission options. Cash wise I guess the five speed I have would be best but shit I would like an auto.
I would do the conversion and any info would be greatly appreciated.
Is there any particular motors/years to avoid etc
Any pros and more importantly cons would be good to hear.

Thanks
Brian

If you get a later 6.5 diesel beware of the injector pumps. I think the manual ones (conversion kits available) are ok but the electronic ones have probs from time to time. The driver for the injectors get too hot and die so if you go electronic relocate the driver to the inner guard. They can be good engine just beware of the electronic pumps unless you have $2500 + 6 to 8 hours fitting spare if is dies. These were a factory recall in the USA.

There is an odd ball 5.7 diesel but I would not touch one. I am told they are near impossible to get parts for.

The 6.5 engines often come with a 4L60-E or a 4L80-E. If you are towing of doing lots beach work go the 4L80-E. If you go the 60 buy the biggest tranny cooler you can fit. Don't have much experience with the 6.2.

Well I made a call today to find out some prices on the diesel engines.
HOLLY S...!!! Way to much just to get a rebuilt 6.5 supplied less all the brackets, adaptor kit and ancillaries. Unbelievable.
I could get a vs vt model injected pety for about half the price!
I can see the advantages of the diesel but i just could not justify spending more on just the engine than the truck is worth. Are the 6.5s really worth that much :? :bad-words: 10500 plus prolly at least another 1500 or more ancillery items.
Anyone know of any engine shops in brissy or sunnycoast that have an engine supply service? maybe specialise in injected motors. What about the toyota v8 would that suit a 75 as far as pwr etc is concerned. I know you can get em for cheap.
I will use all Marks adaptors gear I think so I am just trying to get a total in my head before I jump in. I know the final figure will be more, but a ball park estimate is needed.

I've had a 6.2 for bout 2years now, best thing I ever did. Wouldn't even think of anything else!
They're the same as a 6.5 but run cooler and are about $1500 cheaper. Mine came from Brunswick Diesel.

Al

That sounds a bit dear. I rang this morning and got a price of $8500 to $12500 for a 96 to 2000 model 6.5 turbo fully rebuilt with adapter kit for ancillaries.

Yep it does sound expensive,
Major company in gympie starting with L !!!! ;) . I guess you prolly get what you pay for?
Where was that price you got from auto engineer?

It is a hard decision cause if I go petty (cheaper initially) then there will be a shit load of other stuff that could quite quickly add up to the total of a v8 diesel. And most definitely more involved in the swap.
MY HEAD IS HURTING!!!

That price was from a guy in Toowoomba. Doug Sparkes, the company is Power on Diesel - 4634 7711

Maybe give Eagle Auto Spares a try too. They get a few crate engines.
