why wont it boost ??? AHHH..

Post by peeko22 »

ok i have a 3.0td (1kz-te) hilux with intercooler and after i fitted it its great but now i have lost about 4- 5 psi in boost . i fitted the ic and moved the waste gete hose so it will still run factory boost after the ic .

it has run great for about a 2 months and now it has just dropped in boost it would run 11 psi now it will struugle to hit 8 or 9. i disconnected the wastgate hose to see what would happen and no diffeerence (same when i tweak it up with a bost tap, nothing), it just wont boost up like it used too i checked all the ic piping connections and no leaks, and i can feel alot of loss in power to.

any ideas please, its so frustrating why cant it all just work !!!!

my rocky only makes 4/5psi max because of a faulty wastegate

check the waste gate isn't stuck opem. check your not leaking air or have a inlet hose collasping or restrictive air intake.

any smoke?

also check the error codes that the ecu stores.

the other things are hose to boost sensor and possible TPS fault.
also EGR stuck open or butterfly is stuck on.

nah the car runs fine still, no smoke at all just a loss in power . how do i check the faulty waste gate and all the other things . (egr, tps. etc)

should i take it down the shop and get someone to check all that or can i do it myself. i checked for blockages and all the hoses they all seem fine

Don't know if you can get DTC out of them manualy prob best to get hooked upto a good scan tool to check theses fault codes and a good scan tool should also be able to run a test on most sensors/acuators.
might be best to get it check out by some one qualified.

try removing the intercooler and flushing it out with petrol or kero, they can get blocked with oil sometimes (regular occurance on WRX's)

check that some of your vac lines arent old and crusty as these can sometimes get pin holes in them.

also is the car boosting any later?

If this is the case as previously stated the wastegate may be sticking abit. spray some CRC in there and see how you go.

You say you checked the hoses and intercooler....how?? take it all off and clean and inspect each....a descent leak will do this...also, to check the waistegate, remove the exhaust after the turbo and inspect the valve that closes....if you have melted some of it off, you will not be able to make boost...from what you have said...you have boosted it up...but have you installed an EGT gauge to make sure you dont cook it internally???
Do these two things and you will know its not them....my bet is the waistegate valve is stuck open from a good melting if you dont have an exhaust gass temp gauge

i sprayed tyre shine over all the joins and if there is a leak the engine revs a little and no revs occured and i just visually checked and tightend all connections

. i was told that uping the boost would not effect the egt s cos of the intercooler. hence the point of installing it. i was under the impression that uppin the fuel makes the egt s go up not boost, and i didnt touch the fuel .

it makes sense what your saying but i upped the boost from 10 to about 13psi after i installed the intercooler. surely that wouldnt send egt s up or would they?

Im no expert on 1kz-te's, but if they are anything like the 2LT-E as far as engine management goes, they should have a small vac line that goes to a boost sensor unit.

I have seen this line come adrift on a 2LT-E and give almost identical symptoms. Because you have upped the boost, there is a chance that it has just blown off.

This line tells the computer that the motor has come onto boost, therefore start pumping more fuel in. If the computer doesnt see this boost, it wont pump more fuel, therefore you have more lag, and ultimately wont achieve the same boost levels because the exhaust will run cooler. Long story short, you will notice significant power loss and boost loss.

Check your boost pressure at the turbo wastegate pipe and at the inlet manifold. You may have a blocked i/c that is only showing up under loaded driving.

checked the ic and cleaned it out dod nothing turns out i melted the back of the turbo due to high egt.

intercooling prevents egt s from goin up to an extent but what i should have done as well before i tweaked the boost a little is have got a bigger dumpipe from the turbo to let the exhaust escape quicker or it will cloud around and melt the back of th turbo which is what happend. AHHH. not happy pretty damn cut actually.

so anyone know where i can a turbo for a 1kz te. does the ct20 fit strait in or do i have to replace the ct12b thats in there? i heard you cant rebuild ct12b any info is good????????

sounds kinda od. deisels run lower EGT's than petrols, it should have destroyed pistons and heads well before melting anything on the turbo.
worn out turbo mayby, but melted :?:

if the turbine is damaged check the valves, injectors, glowplugs and EGR valve in case a bit has broken off and gone through the turbine.

gday...this happens because the combustion heat can not get out to a water jacket on the back of the turbo....so she melts pistons have oil squirters underneath and cool air incoming, exhaust has no joy....you will benefit from a larger exhaust....check ebay out...buy an egt gauge, plenty of turbos available, if you want more power, go a little bigger or get a pootrol variable vane on the job....
