rebuilding leaky PS box

My power steer box leaks from the input shaft, and someone told me that it's not particularly difficult/technical to get a seal kit and rebuild it. He also mentioned that if the input shaft has a worn seal surface then i will need a new shaft. Others have told me that it is a professional job only and incredibly difficult to do. Does any one have any experience with doing this and how hard would it be to get a new input shaft if it is worn? Anyone care to confirm either way if i could do it? For the sake of not paying 800 bucks for a recoed box i'd be keen to give it a shot.

i had the same problem as you mate. a mate told me it was easy to rebuild my box, and it doesn't look that hard, until you pull the main shaft out and all the bearings fall out, and then the 2 main nylons get munched by the thread. im no mechanic im a sparky, but even talking to a few mechanics i have now learned (the hard way) that it is a job best left to the pro's. a rebuild kit cost about $50, thats only seals and nylons so depending on bearings etc you could be up for more. also minimum labour is 2 - 3 hours just for taking it in and out. then youve got the rebuild on top of that. (you may as well rebuild the whole unit while its out) Getting it right, well thats another thing. My advice, from experience would be take your old box to a powersteering mob and get an exchange unit. Cost me about $400, whack it in and you wont have to worry bout it for another 10 years. most places offer a warranty of about a year. just my 2 cents.

get one from the wreckers milo and keep urs as a spare and tinker with it
