Cracked Axle Housing

Post by Big Blue »

Hey guys

I need a bit of feedback. I have an 89 NG with a coil rear end. I have cracked the weld that runs around the axle housing about half way between the diff and the wheel. I had it welded up once, but I think the diff oil has contaminated the steel and the welding is less than sucessful. I've also been told that any welding at all can get the whole houseing out of alignment leadng to other problems down range.

i'm looking at tearing down the whole rear end and replacing the buggered housing. I need to do bushes and rubbers anyway.

My question is; Is cracking of the axle housing a typical problem with this model? I admit I tend to have problems keeping all the wheels on the ground, but I wouldn't call my driving "extreme".

I can get the existing housing braced and aligned for about $400 or can search for a stock replacement from a wrecker. If it is a common problem perhaps I should spend the bucks getting it braced.

Any advice would be welcome.

i got a replacment housing from the reckers ($150) changed over the axels drums and put new diff seals in wasent that hard but if its started to leak diff oil like mine did (took 2 years to do this tho) and i 4x4 lots and it broke on the bitchmen would hate to think what would have happend if it did it 4x4ing

but i wouldent pay the money to get it fixed and straitend because it will probably do it agin just laminate it yorself with small beds so as not to get to hot this is what im yet to do and its fine

My NH cracked in the same place but horizontally. I took it to a mate who is a prof welder and like SJ said, a nice row of short welds to hold it together, and a couple of runs to seal it up. It's been 4 to 5 years since it's been done and no leaks. If you do it yourself, just don't let it get too hot. Have a break between the short welds and the bigger runs.

Thanks guys.

I have had it welded up again by a guy with suitable talent, but as this is the second time I just don't trust it.

I'm looking for a wrecked replacement presently. Looks like more time under it rather than in it again.

cheers
