live axle/coil conversion on ifs lux
It's time to ditch my front end and sort my truck out so the current plan is to put in a 78/79 series front diff what i would like to know is:
1. i'm fairly sure the the cruiser diff is about the same width as my ifs lux front am i correct
2. will i have any dramas with things like the transfer/diff centre lining up (shaft in a straight line, otherparts of my luxgetting in the way of arms etc
3. any other tips/warnings people can give me bout this conversion
thank in advanceforany help

Re: live axle/coil conversion on ifs lux
Speak to an engineer (via Qld Transport) to see if this conversion is legal. Some say it is engineerable, some say it isnt. I'd get it first hand before you waste any more precious brain cells thinking about the answers to the first 2 questions.SHANE055 wrote:It's time to ditch my front end and sort my truck out so the current plan is to put in a 78/79 series front diff what i would like to know is:

not concerned
i'm not worried about how legal it is it's illegal as it is and it doesn't spend much time on the road anyway i thoght bout bundera but i've heard it's hard and getting harder to get parts i.e. cv's for bundera and i can get a 79 front diff including front chasis rail cut with all brackets arms etc for $1800

Re: live axle/coil conversion on ifs lux
The cruiser diff is slightly narrower than your current hilux IFS front. It is the same width as a Hilux solid front diff.SHANE055 wrote:It's time to ditch my front end and sort my truck out so the current plan is to put in a 78/79 series front diff what i would like to know is:

The front shaft will line up however you may want to use an earlier solid axle front shaft as the Double cardan joint runs through a greater angle than the IFS one does.
It should be a fairly straight forward swap. Although the chassie widths may be different but that shgouldnt be to hard to work around.
Are you planning on doing the swap yourself? Or getting someone to do it?
Re: not concerned
So are you going to run different stud patterns front and rear and carry 2 spares? 79 series is only 5 stud like 100 series.SHANE055 wrote: and i can get a 79 front diff including front chasis rail cut with all brackets arms etc for $1800
i'll make it work
thanks ruff i'll be doing most of the swap myself with my trusty brother to help and i'd say a lot of advise and guidance from pete and danny at redland
and yeah i know bout the 5 stud problem maybe 2 spares but probably not cause my bro said there's a place just near us that can change the stud patterns by filling the stud holes and creating new ones
once work starts and i figure out how to posts pics i'll create a thread of the project
i'm also planning on getting the X-Link set up from dobbin another reason for my preference for the 79 over the bundera cause the already make it but they'd have to make me a custom for the bundy

Firstly Greetings all, first post on the forum, been cruzin around in the shadows reading, learning, came here specifically looking for info on this subject, I am looking into the exact same thing, Have 2 lux's 91 ifs X-cab 2.4 petrol the project in question, and an 04 D-cab sr5 3TD, my only decision now is coil or leaf ??, with the possibility of a v6 bomadore getting dropped in l8er.
plan is to set the diff, suspension in the workshop then drive in Friday chop off old weld in new, drive out monday,, simple as that!?!?!?!
any advice greatly appreciated.
Sorry for hijacking your thread shane055, drop me a pm we may be able to help each other out.
Cheers.

thought bout the 80 series option but was keen on the fact that they're bout 200mm wider
spoke to dobbin already they have the X-Link for 79 series already but not bundy but could do a custom one forundera grand

hmmm
yeah but there's illegal and there's really obviously illegal and half a micket t hanging out each side of the front and not the rear is really obvious most cops wouldn't know if it's ment to be ifs or coil or leaf what ever

Re: yeah
The 80 and the 79 radius arms are the same mounting and the same length. the caster might be different, but for what you are doing this wont matter. The bundy radius arms are shorter (not as good articulation) and they are pin to eye mounting.SHANE055 wrote:thought bout the 80 series option but was keen on the fact that they're bout 200mm wider

The other thing is that the 80 swivel hubs and rotors etc bolt on to the 79 housing. (This is the setup that I have). This fixes the five stud problem.
I have a 79 front housing and swivel hubs (80 series) etc that I can sell you for a lot less than $1800. I also have a complete but cut up 80 series chassis with all the mounts that you will need to do the conversion for sale as well.
The reason that I have this stuff and found out this info is because I was going to do a conversion on my midi cruiser. I have now decided that I am going to put the midi body onto an 80 chassis because I DO want to go wider and this is the only way that this can be achieved in QLD.
I just want to say that I am not hijacjing your thread to try and flogg stuff off, but am letting you know that I have the bits you need for less than you are quoted, and also sharing what little bit of knowledge I have.
Cheers.
Dave.
