G'Day all,
new poster here. I've been happily learning in the background for a while now while I rebuilt my TD42.
This forum has been really great as there's so many people who've spent the time building some grunty TD42's.
My question is does anyone know how much boost the Safari Garrett T3 is good for before the compressor becomes inefficient and causes too much heat?
Just a quick background on my engine...
* '97 GQ coil cab TD42
* Safari Turbo/Safari front mount ic
* 3" exh with straight thru muffler
* 12mm injector pump built by Highway Diesel set @ .85mm TDC
* New injector nozzles set @ 140 ats
* Engines Australia rebuild kit to suit TD42T
* TD42T oil cooled pistons, all skimmed to give zero deck height and ceramic coated tops
* Grade 3 head gasket
* Rods, pistons, pins balanced
* Turbo pre-chambers
The reason I ask is because since back on the road I have had a problem with warm EGT's. I have it running about 550 degrees post turbo on about 17 psi boost. I'd like to see no higher than 500. A dyno run will be coming soon which will be helpful...
Thanks everyone- as you can tell, I love my turbo diesels!!

Safari Garrett T3 max boost?
Re: Safari Garrett T3 max boost?
I'd wait till the dyno run is done by someone who knows what they are doing, overheating probably caused by over fuelling...
Is the motor run in? (lol, diesels, usually 20,000klms to run in lmao) as in is everything still tight inside... ?

You sure? that's a real long time for a run in.bogged wrote:I'd wait till the dyno run is done by someone who knows what they are doing, overheating probably caused by over fuelling...

motorbikes are the 8,000klm mark due to the high rpms they do and yes they are fully honed etc so that after 500klms you can start to up the revs to help seal the rings.
I ran my Safari turbo at up to 21psi and never had a problem egt's. It would get 14psi at 2000 rpm then hit 21psi at about 2700rpm and would hold 0 through to about 3300rpm then drop to about 18 at 4000rpm. It then ran out of fuel about 3500rpm and I didn't bother driving at those revs as there was no power.
It would peak at below 600c and it made very little difference wether I had the intercooler on or not. I use to run the intercooler for the summer and then take it off for the wet muddy comps in winter. I couldn't see the point in having an intercooler filled with mud doing nothing.
I now have a PWR water to air to solve the problem
