Gu Ute-Leaf to coil conversion

Post by sickgq »

Does any one know where the melbourne would be the best place to get a leaf to coil conversion done. Or if anyone out there wants to do it, i would be happy to consider. Went to PatrolaPart in lilydale and they said they can do it, but a little pricey. Done a little research and a Gq rear end fits the same width and that. my gu rear end has drums, so total gq rear end conversion will be the way to go. Thoughts anyone????????

Make a B-Line straight to cheezy racing.

Id throw in a GQ factory rear locker housing.. can be had for $500 + a bit for solenoids. Gives you a selectable rear locker and disc brakes at the same time.

You could get standard five link throw in.. or a super secret a - frame...

Was thinking of that, but been told that a factroy rear locker is know where as good as an air locker on a normal gq diff.

Thought about using cheezy but he was more expensive again. But could get a-frame rear end at same price. Not sure if a-frame is better than a 5-link or not. Do you get more flex?

factory lockers are just as good performance wise, just need a ltitle tweaking with the solenoid to ensure instant engagement and disengagement.
i reckon your better off selling the leaf sprung ute and buying factory coil ute.

Thought of that but already started pooring money into my ute and in love with it. done front locker, lift, body lift, seats, wheels, tube bar(bought but not on), rock silders, winch, etc. Not worth me selling it. Had to much fun so far.

Add brake master cylinder (if goign to disk rear) and shortening chassis (as the leaf chassis is longer at the rear)to that as well.

Hi All,
Have been quoted around the 2,800 - 3,200 mark including gq rear end 3"dobsons coils, dobsons shockies, stronger trailing arms, rods, fitted, has to change something to do with brake lines. Same wheel base as a wagon.

I haven't done my brake master cylinder yet... It breaks perfectly... Should I have ?

I had drums in my shorty and fitted a factory locker housing. Put a bashplate on it to stop any nasty hits from causing damage. Changed the solenoid to an aftermarket gismo, it locks and unlocks in a flash. Can send ya some pics of the whole show and a vid of it locking etc..

I never attempt to lock it or unlock it when travelling at any kind of speed... and dont see why you ever would want to - apparently you can break the locking mechanism if you do. I am sure in the ARB manual it says dont lock at high speeds or while there is uneven wheel spin..

...for $500 you get a selectable rear locker and disc brakes. I've done it and am happy... etc. I was also told be many people, interestingly owners of 4x4 stores who both stock and fit ARB airlockers, that fitting one of these would be foolish.

If you are going to be changing the entire design of the rear suspension why not make it better straight off the bat... It would be as much as work as fitting factory gear..

I havent either, but I should :D There is a difference in the amount of fluid pressure or something along those lines. Im not a brake expert but maybe someone who is will chime in.

disk rear master has a bigger piston hence pushes more fluid therefore more braking power

if you are going to tow heavy loads i would stick with the five link if its to go 4wheelin then go a good design 4link rear

the reason behind the heavy loads is that all of your diffs locating points are now roughly 1000mm further down the chassis and gives more leverage for the tralier to push side ways and will end up ripping out your mounts on the chassis

but in saying that i over come this problem buy putting a x 4link rear end thus sharing the side loading between 4 mounts instead of two

but i was towing 3.5 to 4 tonnes of trailer for long distances and i would choose a 4 link over a 5 link any day for 4wheelin

as for finding some one to do it buy your self a mig and do it your self
