Hi im going to be getting a 4x4 In the next 12 months.... a used one anyway Im not sure If I should be going for a Pajero or Land cruiser... from what ive seen with my friends land cruisers are heaps better of road but drive like semi trucks.... is this really what there like?

Main reason I was thinking of Landcruiser is because they have some decent suspension in them compared to pajeros

my budget will be $10,000-$15,000 AUD

Any help would be appreciated

What you think would a old land cruiser be alright if you were to do up lift kit and all? oh and do you guys know If you can get ARB air lockers on a 1985 model sort of range? Whats the benefit apart form comfort from a 1985 model to say a 1990 model?

If you want 6" of lift, forget a Pajero.

4" is doable if you do both 2" body lift and 2" suspension lift, but I'm not sure that's what you're after.

The 60 series cruiser is a rugged and capable truck, but they are getting old. Leaf spring suspension can be made to ride comfortable and flex well, but you need somebody who KNOWS what they're doing. There are plenty of people out there with this knowledge, but there's also plenty with NFI who will happily sell you a expensive "kit" which may be next to worthless.

I'm no expert, but I believe the old 4.0 straight six petrol engine is a bit of a slug.

A 1990 model should be 80 series? Chalk and cheese. Long travel coil suspension as standard, incomparably better petrol motor. Still truck like when compared with a Pajero, but once you're off-road that's not really an issue.

Having said that, my brother has a diesel 80 series which he uses for touring, and I believe my Pajero will go more places more easily than his - because mine is more extensively modified.

It comes down to use. You're already talking some reasonably serious modifications before you've chosen a vehicle. If all you want to do is go touring, a Paj with those mods (lockers, lift and tyres) will take you anywhere you want to go - and you'll probably enjoy the bitumen a little more.

If your intention is primarily to "play" on weekends, and your friends are OL types, the 'Cruiser is your best bet. On just about any other 4wd forum in Australia, they tend to classify tracks according to stock vehicles; OL tracks are classified for OL vehicles. I back my Paj to travel any "hard" track on most other forums - because most of them wouldn't be considered "medium" to OL members. :armsup:

I've got a 87 HJ61 great 4b with a 12HT in it
ARB diff lock 2 inch bodylift 2 inch suspension
New ARB bar suited for bodylift
Safari Snorkel
Excellant codition
Rebuilt gearbox & transfer
32inch BFG & 35inch Claws
i reakon I would get between $10000 & $12000 for it
If you get a 60 in excellant condition you wont go to far wrong only draw back is leaves instead of coils

go with a GQ Patrol mate they are tuff as nails they love big lifts and big wheels and they can cope with allot more punishment then a cruiser can, and with a GQ you will get more bang for your buck.

Patrol has 80-100litre tank
Land Cruiser has 180litre tank

After I've paid my 4x4 I'm after a land cruiser myself was going to be a prado but they are smaller than the Tarrano I have now.

GQ patrol VS 80's LCruiser.

Both top two on my list, if i was touring flat out id go the 80's, better interior and more room, i still reckon the GQ is stronger and near bullet proof but the interior is shitful and tiny, you are cramped. but because they are so capable and good to drive you get over it.

drivelines are very similar in strenght and maintenance costs etc.

just need to work out what you want to do with it and go from there id say. i reckon they would both do your needs.

striker, you really gotta let everyone know what type of wheeling your gonna do.

if your gonna go a bit harder than most, id be going for a gq, or an 80, but upgrade the toyota diffs.

i had a 60 sereis toyota(89 model) 12ht , and i compleatly killed it mate, im now looking for ether a gq ute, or a 45 ute 1970s and early 80s ute.

what size tyres would you eventualy want to run??

my advice to you, from my own experiance, if you are going to drive the car daily, dont go doing anything to excessive, as mine spent alot of time getting fixed, and once spent two weeks, 150 ks away from my house. also, i had a wagon, so there were no quater pannels left, and alota dents,

so, if you want a wagon, make sure that it is set up correctly for what you want, and that you learn to drive, better than i did lol....

if its going to be a week end toy, id recomend a ute.

its pretty much a question that needs lots of info, to get a better answer. some cars are better suilted than others for different types of wheeling...
