dual battery question

Post by crack »

gday fellas

im looking at getting a dual battery setup i was thinking of going the pirahana setup. any comments of these?

anyway my main question is whats the deal with the set up as far as closness of batteries is concerned? im thinking of getting under tray tool box's and mounting the deep cycle battery in there.

is this two far away from the main cranking battery? i supose there would be a fair amount of voltage drop?

any advice or comments would be great thanx!!

As a second battery, and specifically one for accessories, you shouldn't have too many dramas with voltage drop. Just make sure you use decently thick wire for longer runs.

While you're at it, if you're running live volts through/past the cab make sure you install a FUSE in the line.

Dick Smith sells fuse blocks for the doof boys which work fantastically for this application.

VSR

We use and recommend BEP Marine Voltage sensitive relays, they are rated to constant 300amps. We use these units because they are tough and reliable. They are very easy to install and come with instructions. You will find that these are the best units available on the market.

i agree, just buy a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) . lot less unnecessary crap involved.

you can buy them at most automotive shops for 250-300 bucks from memory with all the wiring needed, may have to extend the main cable to your battery if it doesn't reach you tray.

You can get a VSR for a lot less than $300.
This is not legal advice.

Review I wrote of all the combinations of batteries and types of isolators. Explanations of the differences etc and spreadsheet to work out the costs of each type.

http://neuralfibre.com/paul/?p=37

Summary
Cheapest per A/H is 2 normal batts in parallel and being careful not to flatten them
Next best is an AGM and a Normal start Batt with a Traxide Isolator. Traxide lets you use 50% of your main batt as well, giving additional free capacity that is normally wasted.
