'64 FJ40 Front Diff disc brake conversion
Hey guys, just bought the first of the 40series SWB cruisers, im wanting to convert the front drums to discs, what diffs out of the other series cuisers would go under that have the same diff ratio?
Any help/suggestions would be great!

You don't need to exchange the whole diff.

from what I've read all the 40 cruisers had the same ratios, I swapped the diff in my '78 FJ45 for one from a '80's model, plus the disc brake master cylinders and your all go.
if you go the power steering swap, there's an easier way for the tie rod/draglink than in that link, I used a 60's box, an d75 series steering arms, draglink and tierod and all just bolts on nicely (oh box needs the usual drilling and plating)
I'm looking around now for the easiest way for discs on the rears, I've seen the "cut the steering hub" way and the "custom bracket" way, just gotta decide which is the better way to do it.........

Im pretty sure a '64 has a different diff housing to the later FJ40,s. It doesnt have CV Joints and the Hilux gear wont fit. It also should have 3.7 diffs. Later FJ40s and allmost all other cruisers had 4.1 diffs.XLGXL wrote:You don't need to exchange the whole diff.

Pretty sure you will not find conventional CV's inside a '64 model. They look more like a uni joints unless it has been changed along the line somewhere (43 years is a long time). I would replace the whole housing to get the discs as well as the later model fine spline pinion and CV's at the same time.
Again this is a 64 not an 81 they have 2 totally different diff housings. The Mini Truck or Hilux as we know it brakes will not fit. As I and Turbo4t have allready pointed out the 64 does not run CV joints it runs a real odd looking joint that is similar to a Uni but different(sorry can not recal the name of them).fullmetaljacket wrote:this may help with fitting up - not with sourcing (sorry)

Your only option is to get a later model Cruiser housing with Discs or convert that to discs. But you will need to fit your current diff centre which will bolt into the later housing. You will also need all the axles and CVs out of the later housing. Actually on saying that i have a funny feeling that the real early cruiser had a course spline axle at the diff centre as well. Can anyone else confirm this?

looking at getting some brackets like these done up, but not sure if the rotors and calipers will work?
