I recently bought a 96 GQ RX 4.2 n/a Diesel. Had a Genuine 173,000 klms. Great truck off road.....for a standard rig. Generaly drivelines are much tougher than equivelent tojos. These trucks have a much tighter LSD than a Cruisers notoriously loose (read almost useless) LSD. If you have ever had to do a rear wheel bearing in a GQ you would know just how tough the buggers are.....

if your gonna go a bit harder than most, id be going for a gq, or an 80, but upgrade the toyota diffs.

i had a 60 sereis toyota(89 model) 12ht , and i compleatly killed it mate, im now looking for ether a gq ute, or a 45 ute 1970s and early 80s ute.

what size tyres would you eventualy want to run??

my advice to you, from my own experiance, if you are going to drive the car daily, dont go doing anything to excessive, as mine spent alot of time getting fixed, and once spent two weeks, 150 ks away from my house. also, i had a wagon, so there were no quater pannels left, and alota dents,

so, if you want a wagon, make sure that it is set up correctly for what you want, and that you learn to drive, better than i did lol....

if its going to be a week end toy, id recomend a ute.

Eventuraly would want to run about 33" or maybe 35" if they would fit

You don't want 6" unless it's for posing, 3-4" is most likely going to be plenty for you. You want space for your tyres and that's it.

I would suggest that you drive a SWB GQ, a LWB GQ, and an 80... and being a young fella I'd say you'll probably end up liking the SWB GQ the most.

They definitely have the best cool factor out of the three, they are quite quick (admittedly still a little bit like farm equipment to drive), and you've got a good chance of finding one with a factory rear locker, leccy windows and the whole bit (ie a Maverick XLT, a ford-badged GQ) very comfortably under your budget. Even a dedicated ricer would say a nice black Maverick on 33s and shiny rims is a pretty cool looking vehicle, and it cuts it as a fourby as well.

That will leave you the $$ to spare to upgrade the tyres (~ $1100 and the suspension ~ $1000 and whack in a decent stereo ($1000) , a few hundred for recovery gear ).

I had a SWB Maverick for a few years and loved it, finally switched to a LWB because I wanted more room for touring, but they are really quite different to drive, the SWB is a lot less truckish and if you get a petrol/LPG one you'll find it's fairly lively.

Any of those three will fit 33s or 35s and they suit them. 37s start to look a bit stupid on any of them; personally I think 33s are the go in the real world.

Anyway, I would say that you should see if you can tag along on a few trips to Ormeau etc through this forum and watch the driving. What you see for yourself and what you'll have people telling you are pretty different.

The only other option I'd suggest might be to shelve your idea of spending $10-15k on your first fourby, and spend $2k on an MQ shorty or Sierra or something, thrash the absolute fark out of it with no regrets, and then upgrade later - and not get drawn into blowing all your money too soon on the wrong car. You can buy add-ons like CB, winch, tyres, rims etc that will transfer to your next vehicle.

It's pretty impressive where an unlocked L28 MQ can go if it's driven hard enough.

just to throw an extra optionin and confuse matters even more you could get a hilux theres plenty of them so its easy to get parts (sometimes) everyone makes optional extras for them plenty of guys on here have them so you'll be able to get plenty of good tech advise (not that you can't get that bout any common truck on here) if you want to cart your mates around you can get a dual cab or if you're like me and have no mates a single cab there only 4 cylinder so rego, insurance, fuel billsetc will be cheaper. I'd be looking at something before september 97 when they were still leaf front not IFS

Well in that case, go the Disco TD5. Same size of a Pajero, Real off road axles front and rear, and the engine fits nicely between a 4 and 6 cylinder. And cheap as chips. And the best thing, you get to work on them every other week end.

i agree. you cant ask someone's opinion on what car to buy without giving details. it just cant happen. it always ends up in a shit fight, patrol vs pombus or vs cruiser or etc etc, because it the peoples who own these vehicles sticking up for their kind..
