Hi all, I have had a guts full of my piece of shit g16b and am looking at upgrades.
Someone once mentioned a commodore V6 in them. I didn't pay much attention at the time but is it possible and how hard are they to do.
What other options are they for reliability and adaptability.
Is it legal to do in Western Aust?

I can't comment on legality, but really commo V6's are an embarrasment. They are a rough and ready piece of engineering, I'd maybe use one in a buggy but otherwise, their pretty dumb IMHO. They're cheap for a reason.
How about an SR20DET/silvia auto/patrol transfer?
Or 3RZFE (hilux 2.7)hilux gearbox/transfer
Both will offer a meaningful increase in power, a nice strong midrange, but not totally change the characteristics of the car.
They are both going to be more money, but will make a nice conversion.
Even a 4AGZE would be cool- they are super torquey and as there is no capacity increase, should be pretty easy to get legal. Even a GZE will almost double your HP and torque in stock form.
In regard to legality, talk to an engineer NOW, before you get all fired up and find out you can't do what you want.

Their meant to be crap the stock Vitara V6s. I kept getting told to steer clear of them. Apparently there is bugger all power in them and they just drink more fuel and don't like revving.
hmmm, Does anyone do an adaptr for the Lux ones. Toyotas seem to be great as far as reliability goes so they look like a good option.
I just have to find out how bad mine is.

the 2.0 is a steaming nard of a motor. It's a really compromised install and there are design issues. they can be fixed, but it's a lot of work for the power. (which is ok but not great)
Bear in mind too that the 2.0 v6 vit ran a wider chassis with a differnt crossmember arrangement so mounts etc won't swap across. all up, it is not better conversion than anything else because the chassis changes will make it a real fab effort to get it in- might as well go with a better motor right off the bat.
The 2.5/2.7 is much better and apparently a fairly easy swap into a 2.0v6 but the are $$$$ (or at least $$$$ to get complete)
PS we were looking a Volkswagen Touareg V6 the other day - 3.2 (now 3.6) litres, 190kw... lots of torque - and barely any bigger than a j20A - they have a 15 degree v angle to both banks sit under one cylinder head - it'd go in a Vit easy even the exhaust is on the same side (they just look like a big 4 cylinder)

The other plus with this is it should be pretty straightforward to engineer as Suzuki offered this as a Factory model.
There are certainly other options but they will involve more work although there may be other benefits that make them more worthwhile for you like power, mod options, diesel etc.

Why? Looks like there would be plenty of room to me - you can get a GZE in a sierra so I can't see why it woudln't drop into a vitara. Someone on this board has a 4AGE in a vit (a green one) and it looks like it was made for it.FullbackNo1 wrote:i heard the 4agze are hard to fit into the vitara

This is a good point Nick - CJ's old 1.6 LWB ran some cam timing changes, exhaust and a couple of other small mods and I thought it went quite well.
Having said that, a J20A will be cheaper than rebuilding and boosting a G16, still something I don't believe can be achieved with reliability unless you are willing to throw cubic $$$ at the build.
If a boosted 1.6 is required - 4AGZE would have to be the go.

I fitted Tri-Y headers (Mugginsmoo has them now for Doof), a 2" exhaust with high flow cat and muffler plus a resonator (to deal with a drone that occurred at certain rpm). I also had Tighe Cams regrind my cam for me and I fitted an adjustable cam gear. Then I had it dialled in on a dyno. The end result with 31's was that it felt more like it used to on stock rubber. It didn't completely overcome the lack of gearing but it was much better on the road and I was happy. It pulled well from low down and had good throttle response. The only thing that still needed attention was the fueling due to the cam profile change. I was going to fit an interceptor to sort this out as there were some holes in the air/fuel ratio that needed attention causing me to back of the max possible power achieved on the dyno for reliability reasons but it fell over and was written off before I got a chance to do it.
The cam gear came from here and was of very nice quality plus Adam was great to deal with.
