welding trailing arms

Post by 86MUD »

Howdy

I am about to sleeve my rear trailing arms ton my 86 Rangie to strengthen. To hold the new steel pipe over the existing arm, I was just going to put a few tabs of weld to stop any movement.

So, my question is are Range Rover rear trailing arms ok to weld?

Cheers

Not supposed to weld trailing arms at all, just drill some holes in the sleeves and fill with silicon, won't move then

Damien,

IS that a legal issue or is it because of the type/thickness of steel?

No just something an engineer told me (guy who does LRA's stuff), they don't like seeing welding on the trailing arms. Easy enough to fill with silicon though.

Engineers dont like anything being welded which is fair enough too as with out been able to x-ray the weld they cant tell if its any good or not..

Its very easy to make a mig weld look good...

In answer to your question yes they can be welded.
I have a set on my 110 that are sleeved, cranked and welded and a set on my Rangie that are sleeved and welded..A few mates have done there Discos too.....Is it legal no,but neither are 35inch tyres

If u wanted to get it engineered u could always plug weld them and grind the welds back smooth and paint them...They wont have any weld showing that way

I couldn't care about it being engineered...I just want strength. I am sure a small amount of weld at each end will be ok.

Cheers
