My question is this.
How many ks do you get before its time for repair/ rebuild of the motor??
Is 230k at the end of its life of say 300k, or are they good for more??
Are there any weak points, or common things to look at when inspecting the vehicle.

Gearbox noise question 5spd manual v8

Many thanks for your advice.
Mate got it, and has done some basic work on it.
He rang me yesterday saying the gearbox was making more noise.
He dropped the oil, and no spare parts came out, and refilled it with atf II oil as per the book.
Brought it over and took it for a drive.
there is normal gearbox whine, however now its alot noisier, specially in 3rd onwards.
Its there from 1st, but very quiet, then a bit more in 2nd, but in 3rd its really loud, and in 4th it just gets worse.
It seems to be speed related, not rpm, and in 5th its still noisey.
We put it in low range, and the noise was still there, then after taking it out of low range, the noise stopped for about 2kms then came back again.
Its like a gear whine, but sharper in noise and pitch, like when hardening has come off the gears.
Is this a common problem, or do you have any ideas what may be the problem??
Ive waded thru the search on gearbox, and gearbox noise, but have not come up with any real insights yet.

sounds more like a transfer case noise, especially being speed related. Try changing the oil in the transfer case, and see what comes out.
Not overly uncommon to have a whining transfer case, but that said, my rangie has 376,000 on the clock, and only has a faint whine at highway speeds.

My thoughts is that its either a tc or its noise transfered up from the diff.
Are the transfer cases known to fail in these??
Mate rekons its getting steadily worse.
Looking at the book, they use 80-90 gear oil in them, is this correct.
