GQ factory locker Q

Post by Snarba »

Hi all just looked at a car to buy today....not too bad has a factory diff lock but it wasn't disengaging. Its an electric one and I'm assuming it wouldn't be too hard to fix.....any ideas? plus I'm not sure how long its been driven with the diff engaged but I figured that would be harder on tyres rather than rear diff, axles etc........keen for any feedback. p.s its a 4.2 diesel LWB with 375,000 Kms. I offered $ 6000

it wouldnt be doin the diff gears any favors buy being engaged all the time especially if its got anything more than 7 inch tyres, crack the bung and check the oil, they shouldnt mind if ur a serious buyer. shouldnt be hard to fix, give it some direct power to see if it will disengage then u can either rule out the switch and other electrics or ull know if its the actuator

factory diff locks are vacume opperated. simply reverse the two vac lines on the solinoids that r located on the fire wall above the exhaust manifold, sounds like a hose has been knocked off or has split due to age, but no big dramas

I've got one and it sometimes takes a couple of kms to disenage, but it eventually does.

It can take its time to engage as well.

I thought they were vacuum driven but this one has a toggle switch next to the tape player so I assumed it must be an electric one...its definately factory though

They are vacuum driven, the plumbing is on the passenger side firewall.

yeh common problem the vac solenoids either get full of crap and jam or the electrics go, get under the back with it running, pull the two hoses off the vacuum diaphram, find the one sucking air and put in on where the one thats not sucking air was, if they are both sucking air the diaphram might be leaking. if its not that the shift fork might be jammed or broken (unlikely)
