Gen 3 in GQ

Post by henry »

Hi, ive bought a low k Gen 3 out of a vx commy, complete with loom and all the bolt ons. I am fitting it to my 91 Maverick. Im using the nissan 5 speed manual box. After info from you guys out there that have experience with doing this conversion and what to do and what not to do. Ive been looking at the marks adaptor kit for the bell housing. And also need to find someone to mod the computor cause it will be looking for inputs from a auto box that wont be there and body security stuff either. All input will be appreciated. Thanks.

Take your ECU somewhere that will exhange it for a MAF less tuned, higher output manual version that has already had the edit done to take out all of the things you dont need.

Engine mounts may be an issue, may have to adapt some.

No the new addition has not slowed me yet. If i can only afford to rego one car a year it might as well be worth it. 3grand for the motor, no gearbox.65,000 ks.

Surely someone on the board has some tales to tell on who to get mafless from at the best price and any comments on adaptors and the rest?

If knowone does gen 3 mounts yet, you can get the standard chev adapters from marks, then an adapter plate that adapts those to a gen3, marks don't do these but Advanced Adapters and Castlemane Rod shop do.

Heres the notes i ended up doing when i was going to do a Gen 3 Conversion on my GQ Wagon (Before i bought a ute instead)

Please note that some of the companies are relative to Brisbane

Hope this helps.

Adapter Kit - Marks 4x4 (http://www.marks4wd.com/)
http://www.marks4wd.com/products/engine ... isgqe.html

Maybe not marks ?? Shit kit ?

Dellow ?
CRS ?

Camaro rear sump needed to clear front axle. (Or america corvette)
http://www.eagleautoparts.com.au/
Can get a Custom rear sump from castlemain rod shop. ($1k)

Custom headers needed ?? (Possible 1 month timeframe to make them)

What Clutch ? (Chevy 11")

Custom engine mounts ?

Need a fuel pump to flow 300kw (bosch motorsport?)
Need a malpassi or similar regulator on return line
Motor will not start if fuel pressure isnt right (Approx 60psi)
No return line standard - T into feed line, then into regulator then to tank.

Radiator - PWR (pwr.com.au) (Can use the rad from donor car - commodore - $350 new for rad - $200 for thermo fans) Make sure to use ally rad on ally engine.

Possible issues keeping A/C - 88 - 89 GQ's (Like the Mav) because of where the panard rod mount is.

ECU
2 Local companies will do a 300kw Mafless tune for $800, also removes BCM (+$300 exchange if ECU isnt right type)
http://www.chipmaster.com.au/
Look for a ECU with "DSKW" on it. its more programmable

Thanks for the replies 6.5 rangie and draven.

Hoping to get rad from donor car.

Looking at fuel pumps, surge tanks and lift pumps.

Ive heard mixed things about marks, problem is people only speak up when they are unhappy most of the time. The satisfied customers are quiet.

Strange they dont have a return line? Maybe they dont need one.

Whats wrong with using the stock fuel reg?

Why did you give away the idea draven?

they have the pressure reg in the fuel tank, so unless you are gonna use the commo fuel tank or the fuel pump assembly you will need to add a pressure reg and return line.

^^^ :D

They have a return line, they just don't return from the rail, you will need an external regulator and external pump, you just T off after the pump, through the reg and return to the tank

Eagles in Dandenong have new rear drop sumps for $350, they came off trucks with gen3's in them, hold an extra litre aswell. Corvette sump around $500 and they are flat with what looks like wings either side.

Corvette sump is a useless piece of crap, use the truck sump, but keep in mind, I cut a heap out of mine and got it tig welded back up and it warped to fark, Had to mill it flat again, hopefully in a Y60 you shouldn't have to cut it, probably the camaro sump would be your best option ;)

MAKE SURE YOU SEAT THE PICK UP PROPERLY, don't ask me how I know

Ok so i expected to put a evternal pump, surge tank lift pump set up in anyway so thats ok.

is the bosch 044 pump enough?

Is this the sump to use?

As fae as the pick up joke goes i guess you had to be there? My guess someone didnt seat the pick up properly and the motor wouldnt get oil pressure... off with the sump again?

Thats the sump, give them a ring and you may get it cheaper (ask for john, tell him your ringing about the sumps on ebay), you'll also need a new dipstick, but they don't have them in yet.

Hey Henry,

I only gave the idea away because a really nice Xtra Cab ute came up with the ol 5L in it already, it was basicly a financial decision, it was HEAPS cheaper for me to buy that ute already done that it was to do a Gen3 and then get the Wagon cut.

The only part of the gen3 conversion that made me a little nervous was the fact u had to get custom headers, that nearly adds another 2k to the conversion... At the end i was looking at 10 - 12k for the conversion (In the end the whole ute will cost me half that) ...Thats not just putting the engine in, but all the extra crap that comes along with it. (Different aircon compressor and re gassing etc)

It's not his Nick, have a look in the members section.

Don't marks do block hugger headers for about $900? Might be way off but thought I had seen them on their website?
