roll cages

Post by rover1 »

what material do you use to make roll cages out of. (dont say pipe or tube)

i want to put an internal cage into my gq ute, i was thinking 48.5mm O/D with 4mm wall, heavy wall pipe, is that too much, i want to keep weight down as much as i can without having to use cromoly.

i can get whatever steel i need through work, but want to use the right stuff first time, no need for overkill.
cheers Pete.

Most of the tubing we have supplied has been 1 3/4" (44.5mm) by .102" (2.6mm) wall thickness CDW cold drawn tubing.
I think the sizing your looking at will be a bit of an overkill.

If you plan to use it in comps then you will need to comply with CAMS standards that CCDA impose meaning minimum requirement is 44.5mm cdw 2.5mm seamless tube. A thicker walled seamed pipe or tube is weaker as the seam can split in an accident

when the cage is installed and you rock up to a comp, how do they check what material you have used? not being a smart arse, but just wanting to know, do you have to supply photos of the building of the cage or an outcut of the tube or do they they just take your word

Seem tube you can see the seem from the outside, even after painting (most of the time). Bite the bullet and do it properly if you intend to compete. Better to build one good once rather then two, one the passes and one that doesn't.

That is correct and scrutineerrs may not have the technical skills to determine if a cage is correct. That is why cages for CCDA events are supposed to be certified, as part of the logbook allocation, a roll cage certification bnumber is stiuck to the cage to determine that it has been appropriately certified.

It pays to do it right the first time.
