k&n filter

Post by changaz »

just wondering if there is any power gain possible from a reusable filter
such as a k&n.
i have never heard of people fitting them to 4x4's, but in a normal car
even a pannel replacement filter can give a good gain, am i wasting my time buying one for my lux?

plenty of people have fitted them to 4x4's even diesels.

power gain.... only if the paper filter is the cause of power loss.

i have one (replacement type not a pod) fitted on my work van, 3L motor, simply due to the huge amount of dirt/mud that gets sucked into the air intake. i was cleaning paper filters every week and replacing them monthly. so the K&N paid for itself fairly quickly.

however there is some debate over foam/cotton filters as they seem to let more fine dust through than paper filters. while thats not much of an issue on petrols, diesels use a lot more air, hence would suck more fine dust through.

but if the factory filter is to small, you have wound the boost up or had to relocate the intake then a washable filter might be the best option.

98 hilux sr5 3L diesel - non turbo

ive had pod filters on every car ive owned in the past, but all have been oh small capacity turbocharged petrol motors that were making a fair bit of horespower.

i was just wondered peoples opinions on if there was a noticeable power/torque gain for the diesel motor when they fitted one.

mate I wouldnt bother, they dont filter that well either.

Just get a good paper one, or a finerfilter foam/ oil one if you want real filtration.

The paper filter in my cruiser (std. toyota part) is washable and does a better job of filtering than the unifilter i had previously.

Oiled filters are great until they get dirty, then they stop filtering. When paper filters get dirty they just flow less...
