Looking at getting a early rangie. 2 or 4 door. Any probs I should keep an eye out for. Prefer dual fuel.

my first one cost me about that, and was in pretty good nick (WAS). Also had a few things, like driving lights, ARB bullbar, woodgrain, few spares etc..

The one I just picked up, 1981 2dr, auto, 3.5 carb, gas, 2" spring lift, 2" body lift, 33" muds, 10 months reg (I have to have it roadworthied within a month to keep the reg). Problems: engine, fuel pump, rear axle seal. it's got a practically perfect body and a decent interior. I picked it up for $1300.. might have to spend $1500 or so on it to get it up to scratch, but that's a bloody cheap Rangie with a motor that I'll have built, and I'll know isn't going to break down.
it depends if you wanna do some of the work yourself, you can certainly get some wicked bargains out there.

LT95 4 speed is strongest gearbox, but truck like shift.
LT77 5 speed is weak, R380 is little better. LT230 transfer case had problems with wear of mainshaft/gear splines - later cured by longer splines and cross drilling gear to provide better lubrication.
I don't have experience with autos but understand Borg Warner autos have problems (viscous coupling?). Have heard ZF is a good auto though.
Chassis web cracks at front spring mount, near steering box.
Rust in steel panels - tailgate, inner guards, inner doors and sills etc.

ZF autos, can't recommend them highly enough. Have a 92 and wouldn't get back into a manual (I'm a lazy bastard, HATE changing gears!!!!!!). The Viscous coupling is a waste of space in any Rangie, have pisswed mine off for the Lt230. Much better, if not a bit noisier. Rather have noise than a centre diff that is not sure when to work!!
The Borg Warners are good cheap unit, but like all old 2 door Rangies that have auto fitted with the standard 3.5, gutless as all hell. The Chrysler unit don't even bother with it as it's worse than the Borg Warner.
For bush bashing, the old LT95 is still the pick. Don't bother with that 5 speed crap, piss weak, although the R380 isn't too bad.

I'm considering selling my Subaru and getting a RR and run it on GAS as an everyday driver.
I want a 2dr.
I have been offered one that has done 550 000kms (thats alot of kms), it needs a new rear diff (I have one here at home). the engine has had rings and bearings about 150 000kms. the gearbox is "loose" but not bad and same with the centre diff. It has absolutely no rust and paintwork and ineterior are very good. $1200 do you think it is worth it? or should I try and find a better one?

That is a lot of km's. It all depends on the life it's led at that stage. The chassis etc will be gettin stressed along with everything getting "loose". If it's mostly highway work then it MIGHT be ok but if it's seen a fair bit of offroad forget it.
I think there are way better ones out there on the cheap, most of the ones I've seen are in the 250 - 350 k region.

Well I've discussed things with the minister of finance and have settled on a rangie, can't see better value for money out there or a match for the comfort level. One query I've read a few threads relating to arb air lokers and maxi drive lockers, whats the difference, I've run a reaer loker in my Hilux for a few years now and had no probs with the arb product.
