re filling hilux gearbox oil

hi i went to replace the oil in the gearbox and can't get the filler plug undone so was wondering if it is possible to refill thru the gear lever hole as i have the floor and console out to dry and was hoping this would make it easier.

Yes would be very easy to fill through the top but you won't know the level of the oil if you can't get the side plug out. But if you go by the manual amount, you won't be far off. Put grease in the top where the gear leaver goes in. It will stop alot of water getting in causing rust.

the plug is only a few bucks even from the toyota dealer so go it with a hammer and chisel to get it undone and then you will know for sure if it is filled to the correct amount...

thanks guys i drained the oil and guess what found metal shavings and a few chunks about 3mm square

so i guess i'm up for a rebuild.

Mate, give the filler plug a few sharp taps with a hammer, to help break the seal.
Then use a 24mm 6 sided socket to undo it with, dont use a spanner or a double hex socket.

If that wont budge it, just use a hammer and chisel.
Bet you wish you had a rattle gun handy now

i managed to get it off now the question is do i keep driving untill it dies or see about a rebuild now or get one second hand and hope its good. it still runs smoothly just getting in first is a bit hard at times.

the question to rebuild a part or not can always be answered by the following -

1. do you have the money on hand
2. are you pedantic about having stuff running perfectly
3. Are you about to go on a trip where a stuffed gearbox would ruin the trip or are you prepared to just wait till it dies a natural death and tow it home.

the last one is the biggy. it don't matter really if you wait for it to die as long as you are prepared for it and don't whinge when it happens. at least that way you don't have to go spend money until you have to.

money will be tight as new bub on the way

longest trip at the moment will be sydney or portstephens so no prob there as have friends in both places

Had a similar thing with mine, one or two 1mm chunks out of box... sinchro's are stuffed, but no noises or grinding (as long as u double clutch) so i dont see that its a real problem...

Drive gently, and according to the 1st gear issue, and you will be surprised how far you can go just by being kind on the equipment.
