Issues with putting LSD on front of 4wd?
Is it possible to take a LSD from the rear of a 4wd and put it on the front? I have an FJ62 Landcruiser with a rear LSD diff and would imagine that have LSD front and rear would help traction etc. I imagine it would be just a case of swapping the heads.
What potential issues could be encountered?
Also what sort/style of LSD do the landcruisers use by default? (1987)

I have put lsd's in the front and rear of my hj60. Makes a huge difference. Not as good as lockers but as long as your wheels are on the ground they work well. I shimmed them up to the max and had the spring stretched 5mm. No adverse effect!!!

The reason this thought has started is that the last two times I have driven long distance the truck a vibration has started and then faded away. Eg last weekend drove 300k with 75k being off road. It didn't start to vibrate until I was almost home and only lasted about 5 mins. Normal smooth brakes and balance and wheel align is spot on. Steering box is getting worn however. Both the foor brake and handbrake pulses. First thought was the diff bearings may have started to go but I may also have broken an engine mount (not sure if that could cause vibration?)
Was thinking if my hands are going to get dirty why not take it further.

It's a good idea, sounds like she needs a going over. If you can do all the work yourself.

First priority is to find this vibration. 98% of the time it is smooth and silky but twice now the vibration and the pulsing in the brake pedals has started and then fades a few minutes latter. Driving vibration is simialr to a badly out of balance tyre. If you apply the brakes you can feel it there to so must be a vibrating axle or something.
Will jack the truck up this weekend and check all bearings etc.
If I get time I will swap the steering box out as well. HAve another sitting there.

The cruiser uses a clutch pack limited slip diff which I imagine would be a bit more progressive. Already have one on the back and no issues yet.
I imagine however that a LSD in the front would actually help. With both wheels forcing the turn. Only downsides would be extra tyre wear and extra load on the joints.

Current plan is to put two in dads lux as it gets rebuilt (might only take 10 yrs). Anyway there was a reasonably long thread in the nissan section if you do a search about running dual LSDs in a patrol, and I think its one of the better threads on the topic, if you ignore the nissan specific stuff.
I'm sure running front LSD will make steering heavier, however the use of p/s should overcome the issues; its not as extreme as welding obviously. Anyway I know a bloke with a ricer, thats running centre and rear LSDs, and is going to get a front LSD; and this is a high traction road car. If a weak little ricer can do it, then most 4WDs shouldn't have an issue with breakages or anything (if thats a concern).

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
