Post by Hally »

G'day Guys I want to upgrade my suspension on my defender 110 ute. I'm just woundering if there is a way of measuring the weight of the front & rear or if anyone could tell me what a 4.6v8 weighs? the vehicle is a 110 single cab ute 4.6v8 zf gearbox winch bar and hight mount, steel tray it has heavy duty lovells on the rear and they are usless unless they are really loaded up and is starting to give me the sh*ts as it is rough as hell

any suggestions would be great

Cheers Hally

The weight on the front would probably be about the same as a V8 county, so county fronts should work fine. County rears would probably work well on the rear too, since the countys were fitted with a load leveller, which meant they had lower rate springs than equivalent defenders.

EDIT - just read the winch part - probably would need HD county fronts then. But DEFINITELY don't get 3.9D springs!

i saw a good set up of 130 rear (outer springs) with poly airs. looked good with onboard air and a gauge. i used to have a 93 110 with 200 tdi and steel tray, canvas sides and 3m roofrack. had king springs with 2 inch lift and constant extra 150 kg's.

ok when tray mostly empty, flex on ramp maxed at 2 inch bumpstop gap to allow for inertia/compression when moving. but on simpson would bottom out and ended up adjusting the konis until they faded.

but i believe 130 rears (outers only and cheap) fixed top and bottom (to make the front flex) with a quality/large shock and polyairs would be  .
my load would vary up to 200 kg every day let alone trips so rear spring rates were a constant pain.
i think *most* king hd springs are too thick in wire diameter, it was interesting to note that when the rear of the 110 was flexed there was still plenty of room between 'coil turns', enough gap to fit fingers in anyway if you get the idea. i noticed this with stock springs and the kings. so no probs with coill bind  .

then there is allways nissan gq/u rears VERY cheap second hand and some variable rate ones out there as well. aparently stock gq/u rears provide a 2 inch lift. maybe take the verniers and tape measure out too a wrecking yard. ?? gq/u rears and poly airs, possibly a cheap combo from the wreckers.

oh yeah and the answer too your weighing question any performance orientated suspension house should have scales. check side too side as well ;)

good luck,
david
