think i need to replace my fuel filter if its the problem, TD42 with 337 thou, feels really sluggish and doesnt really like to rev above 2000rpm, gets really loud and just generally feels like somethings blocked?
I know my tappets are out aswell, but if i replace the fuel filter will it run a bit better and have some more power?
What type of fuel filter to use and how much and where from? And when i do replace it do i have to smear a little bit of diesel around the top of it and fill it up?
A couple other things beyond the fuel filter. Clean out the little screen on your IP under the banjo fitting. Change your air filter. Make sure you -get your tappets set as well. Next on the list would be rebuilt injectors - especially if your have done well over 100,000 without attention. The next thing would be a rebuilt injector pump. However, I would get a compression or leak down test done to check the internals before investing a lot of money on a motor that could be on its way out.
Like Pongo says, get a shop manual and read it before starting anything.
A mate also had a fuel system probelm just got worse really quickly. It turned out to be a 5 cent little gauze mesh filter somewhere inside the fuel pump. was blocking lines and not allowing enough flow for high revs or load on the engine. Tiny little thing but casued major dramas.
We now even call one of our mates "The worst diesel fitter in Brisbane" just because he couldn't identify the problem. Mind you he only worked on CAT Trucks and had never seen the engine bay of a GU until recently.
