sharpening a machette or axe?

Post by j-top paj »

just wondering how to sharpen a machette? just on the grinder? or should i do it like a knife on a stone?
i dont want to hit it with the grinder and stuff it so if there is another way id prefer to do it properly.

a file would work? like a fine one?
or what about a orbital sander? do you think that would do the trick?

I've done mine with a bench belt grinder(?), belt sander maybe? dunno the 'technical name for it, but has a belt on on side, for fine stuff, and a big grinding block on the other side, spins fast, makes lotsa noise, and looks great in any shed

You would do absolutely nothing because you were not committing any offence.

Hansard quote "in New South Wales it is illegal to carry a knife in a public place or school without a lawful reason. "
Having it in your posession (knowledge and control) nside your vehicle is not being in possession in a public place.

If your silly enough to pull it out on the coppers you will probably get a darwin award....

I'm pretty sure you will find that your car on a public road is classified as being in a public place.
When I had a cop come and dust my car for prints (cause some @*&#^@stolemy CDplayer) she saw my small, folding pocket knife on themound between the drivers and passengers seat, it always rides there cause I used to use it for work, but anyway, she said "don't let a traffic officer see that when they pull you up"

EDIT: But of course, under your seat, out of view, its still illegal, technically, but if they have no reason to search your car you have no reason to worry.

I have a couple of "bush knives" (they have a king of hooked blade, so as your swinging it against light brush it catches in the hook bit, great for clearing small stands of blackberries and gause bush) As well as my rough blockspitting axe's.
I use a fine flap disk on the angle grinder, with the disk always rotating away from the sharp edge, and keep it moving so as to not heat up the metal (if it is to warm to touch afterward you are taking to long the bush kvives tkae less than 10 seconds per pass)

You want to keep the sharp bit more like a cold chisel, using quite a sharp taper toward the cutting edge as you are using it more to hack than cut stuff. The edge will be far more durable and less likely to wind up cracking from a stress fracture due to a small dent in the blade area. .. My other one is made from an old bi-metal powered hacksaw blade its about 3mm thick and the cutting area is tungsten carbide ... it never needs sharpening ... even after hacking a chain off an illegally locked gate on my cousins farm.. :D

No your vehicle is not a public place.
"public place" means:

(a) a place (whether or not covered by water), or

(b) a part of premises,

that is open to the public, or is used by the public whether or not on payment of money or other consideration, whether or not the place or part is ordinarily so open or used and whether or not the public to whom it is open consists only of a limited class of persons, but does not include a school. Yea and you were going to start your car with a snatch strap

Yet it is illegal to carry a weapon inside your vehicle, You can a machete in your vehicle so long as its in the boot/tray or locked away, even carrying a steering wheel lock in 2 pieces is a weopon :bad-words:
