TOUGH TRACKS RD3 2007
Moderator: evanstaniland
Ok
Can we go back to the GU front diff for a sec...
It increases the wheel track by 40 mm ( i think 20mm each side)
So the steering arms and what not need to be changed or made adjustable?
So does this mean that we need a plate for this as the steering components are not that of standard?
And can someone tell me what the code is for the plate as the guy we use through work has no idea!

I take it cages and any exo or external bar work also needs to be plated?
It has been said that any mod that would normally require a blue plate must be plated so this includes adjustable pan hard rods, control arms, etc?

basicly, the changes made, are things that should have been approved as your truck was being built, as for roll cages, internal cages need to be plated, external cages dont, they are a different clasification, dont you people use your brains b4 you do a modification to your cars, that you should be able to drive on the road?? ie road rego! most of you knew this was coming, isnt being told, fix it for next round enough warning??????? you all have been told this since round 1 last year,i dont see any of you winge and bitch when they change a winch challenge rule mid way during a event, even half way through a track, or maby your not good enough to progress to the next level of competition????? all i ask is that you all think about the other side of the story not just you and your own little world, you will realise there is a lot more to life then haveing to get a mod approved.
adjustable panhards can not be blue plated and are illegal as far as I know some steer linkages can be , exo cages are clasified as a ladder rack from what my engineer told me, adjustable control arms are not legal, aftermarket trail arms need to be X-raye to prove the welds are good, GU diffs are 60mm wider front n 40mm wider rear. The original rules where registered vehicles with appropriate blue plates except tyre n susspension lift, at round 1 the first year my ute was the only vehicle that complied but under the new rules no vehicle will complie as everything will have a defect somewhere.
BIG GQ you will get the same answer I got to my questions shortly, dont like it dont compete
As far as the jeeps are concerend most of them if not all will be anable to compete in trophy for varried suspension and drive line mods

So you say it has to be driven on the road ie road rego - So that puts all the trucks out that has more than a 2" body and a 2" spring lift. A 4" spring lift and no body lift is NOT road legal ie not road rego!green4x4 wrote:basicly, the changes made, are things that should have been approved as your truck was being built, as for roll cages, internal cages need to be plated, external cages dont, they are a different clasification, dont you people use your brains b4 you do a modification to your cars, that you should be able to drive on the road?? ie road rego! most of you knew this was coming, isnt being told, fix it for next round enough warning??????? you all have been told this since round 1 last year,i dont see any of you winge and bitch when they change a winch challenge rule mid way during a event, even half way through a track, or maby your not good enough to progress to the next level of competition????? all i ask is that you all think about the other side of the story not just you and your own little world, you will realise there is a lot more to life then haveing to get a mod approved.

Keep in mind people that you will need mod plates for after markets seats and harnesses also. Hmm wonder if a sports steering wheel needs a mod plate?

harnesses are not road leagal so no blue plate, Link all I'm sayin is the rules are made for some reason that is not always applicable. Maybe we should have a pajero cup in stock pajero's that way every thing is leagal. If you want to keep things road leagal n qld it will be a very boring comp and I doubt there will be many competitors if the rules are enforced.
I understand the need for plates for rollcages, seats as such.green4x4 wrote:basicly, the changes made, are things that should have been approved as your truck was being built, as for roll cages, internal cages need to be plated, external cages dont, they are a different clasification, dont you people use your brains b4 you do a modification to your cars, that you should be able to drive on the road?? ie road rego! most of you knew this was coming, isnt being told, fix it for next round enough warning??????? you all have been told this since round 1 last year,i dont see any of you winge and bitch when they change a winch challenge rule mid way during a event, even half way through a track, or maby your not good enough to progress to the next level of competition????? all i ask is that you all think about the other side of the story not just you and your own little world, you will realise there is a lot more to life then haveing to get a mod approved.
My question is .. what code for the front diff.. The guy we use through work dosnt know one. And by not having this and the steering arms done will i still be able to ennter?

I kinda agree with that statement. The Club has a set of rules, you need to abide by them, dont like it, dont compete. The same whinging happened when Logan club limited tyres to 36" for there challenge but from what i can see there will be plenty of people still competing there.nastytroll wrote: BIG GQ you will get the same answer I got to my questions shortly, dont like it dont compete
There is no way to please every one and it looks as though a few nissans believe they wont be able to compete so the theory that the nissan drivers make the rules to suit them is out the door. From what i can see the people who made these rules consist of 2 Toyota drivers, a landie driver and a nissan driver.
At least there is a set of rules that we can go by, would you all rather the rules be made up as we go??? Belive me that doesnt work.
I reckon with a few blue plates i will be fine to compete so i dont see a massive problem with the rules however they may affect other vehicle makes differently.
I've had a good read through the rules (challenge spec only) and the only major change i can see is that you need to have your modifications blueplated. The suspension lift needs to be 'trackworthy' not 'roadworthy'. I can only assume that this means i would be able to get my vehicle Roadworthy done then change the lift for competition only. I would think that DOT would not be able to fine me for this either (as long as i dont drive on the road with the excess lift).
I will still support this competition but i will also support a new 'outlaw' class if its possible. Lets face it for $75 entry its a pretty good competition and a good starting ground.
Thankyou to the people who give up there time to make this competiton run the way it does, let me know if you need some help . I think if more people had some appreciation of the affects that rising Insurance costs have on all aspects of the world today they would not be so critical.
I agree with the plates but with all the D.O.T approvals i strongly don't agree.
Why? Why only have some things D.O.T approved? why not all? if you can answer me that than i may agree to it all, but for now track worthy rules over road worthy because none of our trucks are road worthy and i don't care who's truck it is (if the club is so worried about REGO worthys). So who can answer me with out beating around the bush? and i agree with Rolly, the club should be policing it.

And your point is?green4x4 wrote:a blue plate is provided by a approved person who is accredited by transport dept to approve modifications on behalf of transport dept, this limits the amount of approvals that need to go for a full machinery inspection.
It is still going to be a pain in the ass for every one to get and just because some engineer puts a blue plate on a car don't make it legal, DOT can still knock it back. Plus there are alot of dodgy people out there that will put one on anything for the right money.
As linc is pointing out these rules need better clarification. How can a supspension lift over 2 inch be DOT approved?? All fawked up
This is nice - Why not the same with everything else. Eg. dual transfers, steering mods, engine swaps etc.mickyd555 wrote:nastytroll wrote: The suspension lift needs to be 'trackworthy' not 'roadworthy'. Put in suspension and F*=K everyone off and close down the comp or change the rules for next year and make everyone happy and finish off the season.

Its back to the money thing again, its how much do u want to pay a bloke for a dodgy plate?
Is this keeping costs down, trying to mod plate 5 or 6 mods?
I think the tough tracks 4x4 challenge is no more.
might put the window nets on the work ute, I'll probley win.
Oh hang on, the ladder racks aren't DOT approved, dammit.

Well good evening everyone.
Unfortunately some businesses along Redland Bay Road have been with-out phone lines for the last 2 days. Mine was one of them. Which is a pitty because I wanted to be able to respond to each and every posts in this forum, but I have not been able to access the thread since page 4.
Now we are up to page 6 and it is after 12 Midnight so I am going to respond to all valid and constructive comments and queeries and ignore all the comments from the shit stirrers - because let's face it, most of the shit stirrers are not interested in reasonable answers anyway.
So for those that do want to compete I will try to answer as many questions as I can. Questions that I can't answer immediately I will find answers for and let you know.
Although Linc has given me alot of work with all the points raised, I also know that he has gone through the rules with a fine tooth comb and has posed questions, which may or may not apply to his vehicle, to enable clarification for himself and others - and I have no problem with that at all. So I thank him for showing me how to cut and paste quotes a few days back.
FIRSTLY - from day 1, Tough Tracks was set up with 2 levels of competition vehicles. Trophy Class & Challenge Class. Not Trophy Class & 'what ever else goes'.
The Club is run by a group of volunteers, some of whom have been voted in for a term on the committee. The Club does not run competitions to raise money like the winch challenge or the OBC. Hence there has been more of a Club atmosphere and the scrutineering of the vehicles has not been mandatory. We have worked on a self scrutineering system, whereby I was available to any-one who wanted some help or advice as to whether their vehicle complied or not. It was meant to work more on an honesty system as we are not really competing for sheep stations.
However we were starting to get vehicles in where the rules were being stretched or even completely ignored. Only a few people were asking me to inspect their vehicles. Usually officials were asking me to inspect vehicles and give advice. We did not clamp down on competitors - they had travelled out to our club event so we let them compete with a warning that they needed to comply by next round. It was 'in the spirit of the event'.
However the Club was becomming increasingly concerned as to some of the vehicles we were attracting and the validity of our insurance should something happen. We had to make a stand at some point and reign in the modifications that we saw were outside what the event was all about and what we have advised the insurance company that the event is all about.
As stated earlier, the committee consists of a group of people. Some were in favour of introducing safety related rules before next round with other rule changes for next year. Some wanted all the rules introduced this round. Some wanted cut down doors approved with certain conditions and some didn't want cut down doors at all. So if we could not get 100% agreement from a small group of people then we knew that we were not going to please all the competitors. But majority votes were accepted on all rule clarifications and changes and everything (except suspension) came back to safety, insurance and the smooth running of the event.
It does highlight that there is probably a need for another class for vehicles outside the 2 classes that we have, and if that occurs then great. The people on this forum who have been very scathing of what the club has done here should probably put their energy into setting up this 'outlaw class' rather than wasting their energy behind a computer screen.
In my next post I will start to address all the valid comments, questions and criticisms.

OK some clarification needed here. The switches can be mounted anywhere as long as they can be activated from the outside of the vehicle.BIG GQ wrote: Says isolation switches must now be mounted outside of vehicle in one section but then another section says withing reach of "crew"...........what is considered "crew" driver and navi?
I have fitted up switches to vehicles where the switch is inside the car, or under the bonnett. Just drill a hole in the lever or handle, tie a piece of 4-6mm electrical cable through the hole and feed it out through a door opening (ie shut the door on it) or under the bonnett to in front of the grill etc. Place the appropriate sticker on the nearest body panel and you comply.
My Isolator is inside the vehicle in easy reach of the driver but is activated extenally by just this method.

Blue Plated - no problem.BIG GQ wrote:3.4.13 CHASSIS
The original chassis for that make of vehicle shall be used.
So how does a GQ on a GU chassis go ????
Just remember guys that every blue plate comes with a corresponding certificate explaining the modification. The blue plate on its own is not worth the plate it is written on.
In all subsequent posts by me if I say a blue plate is required, I am referring to the blue plate AND the certificate for that modification.
Peter K.
C'mon Linc, as far as I know your sliders are bolted on and your chassis number is visible.BIG GQ wrote:What about 3.4.13
Say my chassis number on my GU chassis is not completely visible (and readily obtainable) because I have welded my sliders to the chassis and my mount plate covers a portion of my chassis number? The chassis number beneath my welded bar work does however match my registration papers trust me what is the deal here?
But IF some-one did - that some-one would have to be silly to weld over their chassis number - or - they must be trying to hide something.
It would be like drilling and tapping the machined section of your engine block with the engine number on it so that you could mount a bracket on it - you just wouldn't do it.
If your car was stolen - "Yes officer, my vehicle was stolen, but if you find it you won't be able to tell it's mine because I welded over the top of it".
OK just say some-one did????? If we can read the last 5 numbers then we should be OK.
