Hi Pinion diff question

Post by ToNkA »

To run a higpinion diff in a lux, what needs to be done?

Is it a direct bolt in?
And what does the higpinion housing come from?

Just a bit confussed as I know people are running higpinions in luxes, but after ringing some gear places for prices ideas etc.. they said you cant have 4.88's for a lux high pinion.

Just a little confussed over all this.

ie/ can i use a a high pinion front out of a bundy in my lux?

Can someone clear all this up for me?

i think the hi-pinin centres dont come in 4.88 but u can put 4.88 r&p's from a centre-pinon dif.

Preeeeeeeety sure the normal ring and pinions wont fit,

The high pinions have reverse cut teeth??????? dont they????
And the high pinion 4.8 is only available aftermarket :(

the h p diff heads are in the 80/100 series cruisers and the coiled 70 series
they are 4.1 or 4.3 ratios mostly. sure they just bolt up,

A high pinon diff from a cruiser or bundera will bolt straight in

the gears from a normal diff wont bolt in to a high pinon

4.88's came in some of the bunderas - i know of about 3 people with stock 4.88 hi pinon's - most are 4.5's in bundy's

4.88 high pinion came from deisel bunderas with big wheel pack(31s).
4.3s were in 22R Bundies
4.5s were in 22R bundies with big wheel pack and also stock diesel.
4.1s from FZJ75s and 80series fronts.

The only part from a normal style diff that can be used in a high pinion is the hemisphere.

As far as i am aware you can not get 5.29s in H/P

Yes they will bolt straight in unless you use a factory electric locker and then you need to modify the housing slightly.

Yes they are reverse cut gears.

REMEMBERONE THING
4.1 ,4.3, 4.5 all share the same diff centre housings . 4.8, 5.29 have a different housing . to fit 4.8 or 5.29 into the other housings u must grind the inside out and weld a piece on the outside .also must check hemi position as u will not have enough adjustment on the carrier bearings . it can be done as long as u are careful. any probs call me 0415156693. ps, kjs spares in lismore have 4.88 high pinion in stock for $550.00

5.29hp can be had for 170USD, so thats about 300 bucks landed depending who you know. i have looked at fitting a 5.29 to the front of mine but cant see the moneys worth when they are only 20-30 percent stronger than standard.

Bunderas are all coil. You should know this Nick.

Robbie yes you need a High pinion for the front. They are very rare. Only came out of 2.4turbo desiel bunderas.

Guys,

I have a turbo bundy with single spinner 4.88's. I want to go to 4.3's with LSD in the rear, so are the following assumptions correct.

(a) For the rear diff i must either replace the entire unit with a 22R Bundy LSD diff, or, get a Toyota G series 4.3 LSD centre and fit it into my 4.8 housing, which will require some cutting and metal work?

(b) For the front diff I must get a set of 4.3 high pinion reverse cut gears from a 22R Bundy, or 80,100 series landcruiser front, and simply change them over using my existing 4.88 centre?

what are they generally worth? do I need the whole axle housing, or will the 4.88 fit in my current 4.3 housing?

Does anyone know if you could go straight to toyota and get a brand new 4.88 high pinion diff centre?

Ive heard that some new toyota parts have come down in price heaps due to the aussie doller or the yen or something.

Probably still cost an arm and a leg or maybe a kidney.

But hey it might be worth asking. Have heard you can get new crate motors for only a little more than a recon  .

All bundera's r coil sprung and have high pinion in the front only......

The only other Bundys to have 4.8's were some import ones after 1986

All high pinion diffs will bolt into the front of a bundy no matter what the ratio...... no mods required........

Gday
Had 5.29 in the 80 series front (and rear) b4 it fell off the road, so they are available reverse cut to suit front, used a 60 carrier in the rear 80 housing with 37/7 gears (or 5.29) for the rear.

Could someone please confirm that the 4.3 and 4.8 centres are different, and a 4.3 centre will not fit in a 4.8 housing without some modification?
