Just hit a stump

Post by speed=t/d »

Need some advice. Just collected a stump (very large stump) at about 20 - 30 k's. on the drivers side front wheel. (stopped the vehcile 03' GU TD6 S/Wagon).

Bent the steering arm (top) like a banana and the bottom control arm) just after the steering damper near the L/H wheel. The steering pulled hard to the right when collision occurred.

The steering wheel position is now almost in the upside down position when wheels are straight. Obviously need a wheel alignment and I'll have to take the wheel off (alloy factory) to see if its still round.

Can't seem to find anything else bent ...anything else to check when the front wheel has a big impact like this? These really are tough trucks..I couldn't believe that was all that was wrong as it was quite a big hit.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. And also should i just replace the arms with standard new nissan parts?

I would imagine is is likely that you have bent the housing as well, that is a big hit and to have bent a control arm  I think the diff may be bent as well, maybe replce the bent stuff throw the spare on and get a full alignment and check for camber etc

I doubt you have bent the housing. Easy to fix though. I have seen many control arms get bent and snap and housing was good. Some were not braced either if any one is wondering. If you did not blow the tyre than I doubt the rim is damaged. Insurance will sort it out for you. The patrol steering arms are weak as piss so that is a good excuse to get some aftermarket ones. Steering is out because you have bent both tie rod and drag link.

here are the photo links to photobucket. haven't done this before so I hope it works.

Ludacris thanks for your reply, what do you recommend as replacements? And is it a good thing they are a bit weak as they may have given some instead of something more expensive? just a thought.

Every thing looks fine exept for the front arm. You can pull it off and straighten it by yourself but do replace it with a Superior engineering one asap as it has a weak link now.

little note tho for poeple with the early gq steering boxes. dont upgrade the steering arms untill you get a big box as next time the worm drive in the steering box will break:P

id say you wont havnt damaged too much more than the steering arms
id get new arms and take it to an alignment shop they will be able to tell you what else if anything is out.

just a quick note, as to me it looks like you are saying you bent the steering arm, and also put a bend just past your steering dampener in this pic, that bend in the pic is factory, its so as your panhard clears the control arm brackets on ur diff :) jus so you know,

i may have read it wrong also. as ive had a few heheh

I'm running the 4.2L Turbo Diesel ......whats the recommendation for the replacement? I have also some pannel damage front side step and guard and drivers door so its going to be a insurance claim. I haven't priced a genuine Nissan arm yet (that's what they will want to replace it with) but I should be able to nominate if I make up the price difference.

I have seen a 3rds arm take the brunt of a GQ landing on it with little more than some rock rash to show for it, $440 may sound steep but they are the ducks nuts IMO
