Should i buy an FJ40?
Hey,
Im new to 4x4's and im pretty keen to buy an old school FJ40.
The one i'm looking at is
SWB soft top
350 Chev
4 spd Box
Straight gas, dual tanks 120 liter
Think it has a bit of lift
blown manifold gasket - needs to be fixed
Whats everyones thoughts on this? im been looking for about 6 months now and this one seems to be about right.
Any info would be great.
Cheers,
Michael.

Wanted: Car trailer or beaver tail truck, let me know what you got
Its on carsales.

It does have rust....doesn't appear to be too bad.
Im in townsville so its hard to test drive. i was thinking about getting it to a mech to check over and road worthy.
I was going to buy the white one from pitstop 4x4....but the guy jerked me around majorly.
Unless anyone knows of another one around that price range in north qld?
Thanks for the info.

Im here for the sausage!
mate thats a fair bit of$$$ for a "non huge Fj40"it looks very tidy.
mate looks fairly freshly painted. i would be taking a fridge magnet to inspect before paying a cent to check for rust.
it doesnt mention a mod plate for motor???
It looks tidy but anything freshly painted will be bound to be full of bog being a 68 model.
maybe as a first 4x4 you should look at a more basic one???
but hell yeah get a Fj40 mate they are old school tough. and simple to fix and buy parts for.
but if your going to do any touring i wouldnt get one.
as a toy/weekend warrior they are top fun.

$7,500 aint too bad if the engine is ok and the body/chassis isnt rooted. Definatley get a mech to inspect it and make sure its not something more than a manfold gasket (methinks he could be covering some other more expensive problem).
Oh and is the rollbar hoop way too high or is it a frame for thr top that makes it look so Dudelux?

mmm
Should ytou buy a 40 series - Yeah if you want one.
Should you buy that one ... not for that price and spec level.
The postcode is what you would call a major beach zone and a 350 and a 4 speed smell of beach use. Being a 68 model with a different screen and a fresh paint job and a seller not wanting to get a RWC I would be very cautious.
If I was buying at the moment I would take a very good look on ebay at number 230149633460 BJ42.
Why ... well cause it well worth the money and a much better starting base. Being the BJ 42 LX it will have all the creature comforts the 40 series had to offer and will hold its re-sale value much better than most others. The 3B is a great engine and will not only give you better fuel figures but run under water in the wet season.
Good luck and if you find any in Brisbane you want checked out let me know and I can help you out.
