Cranking Torsion bars

Post by Dexter »

Hey guys,

I have read the bible and I know how to do a search, I was just wondering if someone could give me a quick run down on how to 'crank' the torsion bars on a Gen 2 Pajero. I have had a good poke around down there and found that there is a bolt at the very end of the bar(front of the car). In my mind tightening this bolt will stiffen up the torsion bar and give me more lift, is this correct.

I also assume that re-indexing the bars is when you remove this bolt and remove the bar as a whole and re-insert the bar under full tension as overtime they sag, and the bolt adjustment does nothing.

One more thing, bump stops... looked at mine and they are huge, if I were to trim them down, should I try to maintain their shape, or can they just be flat?

I will take photos when I am doing it to aid those that come after me, as there seems to be a lack of those :)

Thanks for the help.

the bolt you need to tighten is toward the rear of the car. near the xfer from memory.
with the bumpstops i just trimmed a little off them. 15mm i think it might have been.
when you have pics its easier to describe

Yeah I have figured out how the torsion bars work... god the internet is grouse. And have found the adjusting bolts... looks like I have a heap for adjustment left in them so thats good, then I will get onto doing the coils in the rear.

Any tips on that?

coils in the rear? easy.
just jack the car up so the diff can come down.
undo the shocks and pull old springs out and stick new ones in.
spring compressors make it easy. shouldnt take you more than 20mins
