i just had to replace the starter on my 5L lux. 3 options: get a starter from a wreckers etc, with no gurantee on the history, get it repaired by an auto electrician which can get exy quickly or get a reco/aftermarket from an auto electrician (which is what i did $400). new genuine ones from toyota are $1200!
take the starter motor out.
Take the end off the solenoid, the smaller bit on the top of the motor.
Replace the 2 contacts if required, (10 bucks from auto elecs) and clean the circular disc that connects the contacts thats on the solenoid bit.
Clean and ensure its all working well, and not sticking.
Have fixed several, and they have years on them now after that.

Does that apply to zook sierra starters too?trains wrote:take the starter motor out.

Pull them out and see, or call repco and price both starters and ask for both part numbers if there the same part number it'll fit. Yeah sounds like a solinoid. i wouldn't hit it too hard from what i've been told magnets don't like shock and some newer starters don't like a little tap. being a lux it should be hardy enough for a little tap
plenty of parts on the bench
Zuks are notorious for the whole "clicky starter"ausyota wrote:Does that apply to zook sierra starters too?trains wrote:take the starter motor out.

Unfortunately I think they will be different as the two models both have different engines and gearboxs.Lux_89 wrote:ok so i got it working... ive got a hilux that im wrecking atm and its got a 5L 3litre out of the newer model in it.. will the 5L starter go into the 2.8?? or is it completely different... just to save some gino's. Depends on wheather or not its caused due to voltage drop.
The lux's have a solenoid, thus the issue of voltage drop is somewhat reduced.
My old falcon (1965 xp) had a clicky starter, all batt connects on the high amp side were fine, it was the lack of voltage getting thru the starter switch to the solenoid, that would not allow the solenoid to properly engage, thus the click click when turning to crank.
Fitting a solenoid fixed this problem.

You dont need to think it will fit. IT WILL FIT. They are interchangable. Chances are the one out of your old hilux is still the original 2.8 starter anyway.Lux_89 wrote:thanks all and high and mighty the lux that i had was an aftermarket donk it was a 94 single cab with the 5l dropped into it and was running a g52 behind it.. so thats why i think it will fit, still didnt fix it yet so i hope it last to next weekend, and yeh ill try not to bash the out of it wen it breaks i got a bad tempa..
