Cracked fan blades

My Mav started to make some noises up the front of the engine. found that the plastic hub had cracked ( apparently common). It is the original fan and it is 14 yrs old.

Removed the hub and fan and found that the noise was actually made by the alternator..sounds like bearings. Still charging OK.

Now I have to find another fan, and get my alt fixed.

Did a search re alternators in OL and found al lot re diesel ones...mines a petrol dual fuel. Needs to be simple.

My factory alt on the TB42 died in the arse a few years back.
I just phoned around the wreckers and had one sent out to me with 1yr warranty for $130 IIRC.

The origianal one in the 1988 GQ was a pissy 50amp the replacment was 70amp, same setup (twin pulley) just out of the later Petrol GQ's.

I would replace with EFI GQ Alternator, Direct bolt in.

I have fitted high end EF Falcon one, swap pulleys and modify bracket but direct wiring swap.

My fan had been araldited b4 I bought the car. First modification other than laying it on it's side.

not sure if you can track down blades to suit the petrol hub, but worst case you can fit the diesel fan hub/viscius hub and blades, i have the deisel setup fitted to my TB42 and works a treat,

try ebay on the fan blades, never know your luck.

Hey just wondering if the blade pitch and quantity of blades on the petrol compared to the diesel matters. Ive thought many of times about putting a diesel assembly on mine but just not sure

there is a difference between them, and it is one blade, but i use it on my comp car, and has been now dramas to date, that is with slow heavy off road,

worked well at tuff truck, only got hot cause we were loosing water form the radiator as we had a leak, finaly got to too hot but thee was no water left in it,

I will try and source the later model alternator if it works out to be the right price...

As for the fan, I forgot that I had two Davis Craig fans that I had removed from a V8 Fairmont, which have been sitting in the shed for years...just need to make a bracket to suit and get a thermo switch.

Now that I have removed the cracked fan and the hub, I didn't realise how much noise the standard fan made . I can now hear the rattly bearing in the alt more clearly. Seems more responsive too. Well a bit.

I have tried the thermo thing before.

Now run a standard fan on any 4wd.

No real factory 4wd has ever come out without an engine driven fan.

Try the thermos if you want but Id suggest not waste ur time.

Mate didnt listen and now has a GU that overheats in the middle of winter.

Thanks Mick, mine is a 93 mav and may have also the smaller alt, as all the good bits seem to go to the EFI Patrol models..I will keep you in mind, but freight to Vic could make it expensive.

RN the 1988 carby GQ's came with the 50amp Hitachi alternator.
Not many amps to go around thats why micks troll is upgrading.
It will get you by no worries, just can't run under heavy load from a few driving lights and accesories.

Look for one of a late model EFI GQ, you know it makes sense
