NL 2.8TD Q's

Post by South »

Howdy folks

I'm deciding on maybe an NL 2.8TD GLS manual and want to know how they go. We have an NJ 3.5 GLS manual and its a good piece of kit and I wouldn't mind an NL 3.5 but the niiiiiiiice Exceed one was snapped up under me (52k kms on the clock, immaculate :( )

Anyway, this one has 196k km's on it. What should I be looking out engine wise. Everything else I'm happy with, but I know little about the diesel.

I'm considering the diesel as I want to do a few long trips in it and thus its easier to get diesel and share it in the outback with other diesel folk on trips.

I'd be doing the usual to it; so how do they go with 33's?

What kinda engine tweaks, and estimated power gains can be achieved, with exhaust, intake and fuel changes would one walk all over the 3.5 in a straight line?

Cheers

I have a NJ 2.8td

I have 31's probably would not put 33's just to help that little bit. I find the 2.8td once you learn how the power curve is great in most 4wd applications except right low down torque like pulling up hills from a dead stop. Like up a boat ramp you need low range for a boat over 17 foot

You would want to get service history as the diesel loves services.

Even with good history, you could expect an injector pump service at those sort of k's - about $800-$900 I think.

I looked at a couple of 2.8's and couldn't justify the lack of power, compared to the 3.5, considering it is a fairly thirsty diesel.

The Exceeds are nice, but it is hard to find one in good nick and with lowish k's. By this age alot of them are starting to suffer cracked leather etc, so all you gain is dual air really. I don't think they came in diesel either.
