Nissan Trials Day 1

Roll was after I had finished my run
At the bottom of that climb it is very very sandy and you need some speed to get though it so I had to go in 3rd low to beable to do this, I looked at the hill and thought to my self that it should be able to do it in 3rd but it couldn`t and it stalled just as the rear wheels were all but up the step If it hadn`t had stalled I would have driven this stage to the end Even all the officals said they thought I had it untill it stalled. Where I stopped wasn`t a very good spot to have done so as I was slightly across the track at an angle. But in the car it felt stable, but people that were watching said it didn`t.
Then the recovery leader was just standing next to my door asking us how we wanted to go about the recovery and the front end just slid sideways off the rock it was on and over we went. This roll was not from something the recovery team did as a lot of people have been saying. I didn`t even touch the clutch, key or anything it just decided it wanted to roll over and play dead
The only things I will be doing to it before woodpecker is putting a new screen and quarter window in it and making the passengers window so it will wind up again as I am driving it to woodpecker and not towing it.

one side of roof, other side has another dent about the same but it is write at the back and write on the back corner so it will be the hardest to fix.
After Woodpecker I will be pulling the lux apart and replacing both doors and both gaurds and fixing bonnett and roof, I will also be teaching my self to panel beat and spray paint.
The damage to the lux isn`t very bad at all but I like my rig to look good as well as go good so now`s the time to fix it up again.

Seems to be a bit of a theme with the Trials, rollovers. Is it because they are making the events too hard or are people over commiting themselves in thinking they are more experienced and have better set up vehicles they actually do? (I realise Guts rollover was a bit different). Just wondering if the event is pushing the boundaries faster than the competitors can keep up. Or was it just oops, bad line etc?
As competitors do people want challenging obstacles or obstacles that will destroy something if they get it wrong? Surely you want to be able to test yourself and your machine but without the likelihood of writing your car off like the Christies and Ian Maroske from last year or doing major damage to the vehicle.

I think the terrian of the area is a contributer, Its the sort of stuff That
crawling is near impossible , steep climbs with uneven steps covered with
a dose of sandy scree thrown over the rocks, All of which need a dash of momentum and the occasional extra loud pedal thrown ,Plus Some ovesize goolies, to make the transision between the obsticles.
It is the exact type of terrian that oz is renowned for .
I think the trials are a great test of a vehicle ,driver, nav- Its probly one comp I won't do myself , and I commend any one who does do it.

A real obvious answer might be that the cars need to be lower or wider right?

Was a mad weekend. Thanks for the ride in your passenger seat Ben!! Was mad over on our side stabbing it backwards and forwards in the wooly-mammoth holes!! And in the mud "FUCKERN GET UP IT FARKEN GO!!!!!!' hehe. Ben drove well alll weekend, we just lucked out a couple of times.

he has had the black zook for ages. It was his daily driver before we attacked for the jamboree, it has gone all down hill from there!

I had a great weekend watching some of the trucks I have worked on, including Thunder's GU, the Silver Bullet (which blew a CV and rolled on the stairway), and especially Matty Pascoe and Drew Woodhouse taking second in Modified Class in Matty's sprungover 75 series, after not having driven for months due to a lack of funds it was a great result without having had any recent practice - GO TEAM SPECIAL!!
most of the action was great, for the most part the tracks were really well constructed and worked out, giving drivers options for different lines etc, and a great variety of rocks, sand/dirt, tree roots/wood, holes, logs etc.
(whinge mode) BUT what SUCKS is the mud event - it does so much damage and the mud is always more about tyres, power and clearance and less about driver skill. blokes can have a top weekends drive and think they've done no damage until a month later and a diff or a transfer or a wheelbearing shits itself, or like what happened to matty, even after the RFS hosedown the radiator is still full of mud and you overheat on the way home. there was less people at the mud than at the other event site the 2 times I went down there, and it really is boring to see most trucks get stuck in the same place, and the bigger trucks get through pretty much every time.
also what are people's opinions on the BIG second hole on the open/outlaw track for the wombat holes? why wasn't the bigger holes at the high points end of the track? do you think the 'big' hole was driveable in any way other than John John Roberts/LJ Beep Beep's method of skirting the hole completely? a few big trucks performed that trick successfully but mostly trucks just fell in the hole, was a bit boring to watch so many trucks being recovered.
did anybody see Snowy's Rollover on the logs event? that was a classic, I was watching the wombat holes but saw snowy's truck in the air over the crowd, how he got it to flip out of that ditch I'll never know!

i too took the zook line in the wombat holes but i was shitten that i may fall in..

yes i just watched the vid that my mum took and saw that the old jeep 'MADCOW' drove this event and drove right thru the hole

I must admit what Larry says is pretty spot on.
The terrain does require a little punch and momentum. I'm not normally one that drives to hard, but in some events like the trials terrain, you definetly need that little momentun up those hills.
When I come to grief on track 3, we remeber being clear of all the hard stuff and looking at a series of photo's taken, it seems the rear diff got hung up and having that momentum and power down the front slid across the hill, put us on a bad line, than the rear dropped off the rock and away we went.
Happened so fast.

We done well for our first comp
thanks to Hypo for taking the reigns
at a late notice and pulling it off
next year we will be better prepared
with all our drivers and navi's organized early
and a reserve so we dont miss events

Its difficult because most places you cant reverse
and you may slide offline but you are commited to keep going
you may be 3 inches to one side of where you wanted to be
but you just have to punch the loud pedal and try to get back on line
without loosing too much momentum.

Thats the thing, your there to have fun and we all know the risk involved. I was only talking to Chris Chapmen at Track 2 about roll cages etc. I think I must of jinx myself.
The body of the truck is totalled, Jamie Way kindly got my engine going again.....BIG THANKS and the rest of the chassis and running gear is sweat. I'll sit on it for a month than get back into it, way up my options and prices for turrets/complete bodies etc.
I was more angry not getting the chance to crack day2 as I would have open the suspension up and let the old girl really spread her legs for the crowd. Next Time!!!!!

everyone enjoys the roll overs but it became so boring on day 2 where most of the trucks were going over on the wombat ruts and the course next to it with the big hole and if two went over at the same time then there wasnt much to look at except the stairway or walk to bog hole. Later in the day most of the trucks seemed to get through the wombat ruts by taking a different line.
I almost got hit by snowy's roll that was awsome so close to the action and it was funny to watch rodified go over after he got a rerun.
Was good to see Ben's disregard for the tlcc recovery team in the wombat rut. Dan just coulnt get his head up enough though to give everyone a wave.
Great fun over the two days
well done to all drivers for providing the entertainment and the fella who gave the tlcc guy crap for his short shorts all weekend.
