A mate was wondering if you can successfully supercharge the patrol diesel in aim to get get rid of lag. Or is twin turbo easier? Thoughts and explanations will be appreciated...
i dont know why you would bother really, one nice well suited single turbo will do the job very well if not better then a twin turbo setup and costs a shitload less to work out, as for supercharging, you turbo a diesel to get gasses out, you dont wanna ram shit in to create more gasses ...

Well my understanding is, you can get just as much with super charging as you can with Turbo with the right pulley setup, and because its running off the engine it generates boost while at idle and no lag on take off, also you can have yourself extractors and a 3" system to let the gasses out quick.

Pretty common myth that, remember the turbo is a restriction in the exhaust robbing power and generating heat, it all comes at a costazzad wrote:Turboing is almost free power, driven from waste gases. Great on diesels that arent powerhouses.
Super charger takes power from the engine to drive it, not free. Great for big capacity petrol engines with power to burn.

the biggest problem with super charging seams to be finding room to fit the supercharger and belts etc.
with deisels turbo's are certainly more effiencent but lag and lack of down low and low throttle boost are a problem.
no reaon you can't run both. a supercharger will give you that off the line grunt and help get the turbo spinning up quicker. once the turbo is running a full speed the supercharger can be bypassed. i uderstand that that working out the point where the bypass kicks in is a bit tricky.
still the catch is always $$$ and room to fit it all in.

I agree with you dazza. I also like the idea of supercharge for bottom end and to get the turbo spinning for top. Its time for more research. I currently have a td 42 running garret 25bb with good power and torque but it suffers down low with the 35s on. Appreciating everyones thoughts and opinions...
trust me it aint worth tryin to do a supercharger and turbo, ive seen it and its benifits are far less in comparison to the ferkuking around that goes into it and if the problem is that u want power from 0 to the almight 5000 revs a TD42 is capable of, get a better engine, if u simply wanna make more power out of that motor, keep it simple and just do a turbo, easier to do and better performance

My mate has one, was hoonz's old beast, it is like a tractor through the typical diesel rev range, nothing slows it up, turbo's that I have driven are nothing like this for tract-a-bility But it doesn't have near the wound up punch of an aftermarket turbo.
I think what people miss is that it doesn't matter how much power is robbed in the process of making more power it is the end result not the equation that matters.
Me I would go turbo, and put up with the relative increase in lag compared to this supercharged setup. Actually I wouldn't go either happy today to stick to my NA TD4.2

*JUST LUV IT* 96 GQ LWB TD4.2, Cav, Kings, Dobinsons, Motorguard, Enginesaver, 400 pro, Cooper ST's (rolls eyes), fleetguard oil filters, Delo 400 engine oil, Delo ESI gearbox oil and an RTC.
Yes it can be done, I have done it. Worked unreal, no turbo lag and still made 140 hp on the ground. I still have full kit, manifold, supercharger, belt, all pulleys and mounting brackets. Recently removed for V8 conversion. Contact me at prawnspatrol@hotmail.com if you have any questions.
