GU steering into GQ ????
GU steering into GQ ????
My gu coil cabs drives real nice and I would like to have the missus maverick s/w drive the same, can I swap steering box, power assist unit etc straight into the mav, any other tips that would make the old girl to drive (the mav not the missus)

i've done the same, real easy, just need a new drag link so the tie rod can be the right way up.Madmac wrote:A GU steering box will bolt straight into a GQ, however you will need an adjustable drag link to make it work as the tie rod end bolts into the top of the pitman arm on the GU box as opposed to the under side of the GQ pitman arm. ive fitted one to my GQ it was fairly easy
Gq ute new built
i dont think it made any difference to the way it drives, may have gained a bit more lock to lock after winding the stops in a bit. and it doesnt take quite as many turns of the wheel from lock to lock, i think the gearing in them may be different. the main reason people (myself included) fit them is because they are a bigger stronger steering box and can handle more abuse than the GQ box
most good 4wd stores should be able to get you an adjustable drag link, i paid $260 for an M&M engineering one complete with tie rod ends. as for the steering box, id say ring around, most wreckers i phoned wanted about $650, i finally found one at Franks parts plus (smithfield NSW) for $450 with a 12 month warranty
NO... I spoke to Superior Eng. last week when i bought my HD drag link and was told while the tapers were the same the lengths were different.Timmsi wrote:Hi,
So the tie rod end is the same size and can bolt in?
I already have an adjustable draglink and have just busted the power steering box. Would love to upgrade to a GU one.

I always thought the tapers were different..
They told me a GU will fit a GQ but not the other way around..
Measure your thread pitch and dia. and you may be able to order just the tie rod end.
cheers smitty
innovation is better, better is faster, and fast is all that counts
Hi,
I'm going to go with the Series 2 GQ steering box. Central Coast 4x4 Wreckers have one for $275.
From my quick research it's pretty much the same as the GU but the pitman arm still fits the draglink end OK.
Spoke with 3rds productions (who I got the draglink from) and they have different threads for the tie rod ends on the draglink between GQ and GU.
GQ is a 22mm thread and GU is a 20mm thread. They also thought the taper and length of the bolt into the pitman arm were going to be different as well.
I think this is best option for me at the moment - keep my draglink, fix power steering and get a bigger steering box out of it all.
Thanx again,
Timmsi

ah bugger! I thought with the longer GU pitman arm with the dog leg in it would lower that end of the draglink but I read that the draglink has to sit on top of the GU pitman arm.hammey wrote:Nah.. not really..sudso wrote:Does fitting a GU box and pitman arm to a GQ change the angle of the draglink?
I'd like to get my draglink and panhard closer to horizontal and parallel (6" spring lift) so they work in sync. again.
I can do the fab work no worries, but I'd like to get that side of the draglink lower. I thought the GU box and pitman would do it.
I was speaking to the bloke at Snake Racing months ago and he said they were going to make a steering knuckle adaptor for the left hand side to raise that side of the draglink for lifted trucks.
I should give em a ring and find out what the jazz is I suppose.

Hows that? Is a new taper pressed in or something?nastytroll wrote:you can get the pitman arm reverse tapered to put the tierod on the bottum
Snake Racings high steer knuckle adaptor for GQ l/h knuckles will be released in a few weeks too

With the flipped taper and high steer adaptor the draglink would be a lot closer to horizontal.

Thats the plan ozy1. Well, mod the panhard mount pozzies, not the panhard itself.ozy1 wrote:and of course you will mod your panhard bar to bring them paralelleagain wont you? so hey work in the same arc.sudso wrote:Hows that? The fab work I can take care of.
