1HDFTE from 79 Series

Post by me3@neuralfibre.com »

I was speaking to Ryan about a Multivalve Diesel to drop into the HZJ105. He indicated that the 79 series motors were not as fussy as the 100's - not needing the dash etc.

Has anyone done this swap and can you give any tips or comments?

It's a lot easier to get a 1HDFTE in good nick than a 1HDFT

Thanx

is it not the same motor in the 79 as 100? only difference would be the intercooler?

Not 100% sure on the engine, they are both electronically controlled injection and therefore should require all the same computers/looms. However remember you will need the H series gearbox from either the 79/100 or from an 80 series as the r151f will probably last 1 week behind the turbo motor.
Cheers,
Dan.

Have slushbox, will travel.

Auto GXL HZJ105 (already turbo'd) - rare combo.

Now if only Toyota did a 1HDFTE w/ 5 Spd Auto in HZJ105 chassis and optional factory lockers we would all be in heaven.
Got me buggered why they don't.

Yes, the 100's 1HD is alot more "fussy" than the 79s. They are security coded. You will need the key and ignition barrel, and ALL the dash wiring to make it work. Not so with the 79's motor (you will still need the ECU and most of the dash wiring). One of the bigger headaches is the tacho. a 1HZ gets its signal directly from the pump, the 1HD gets in from the ECU, and you cant just trace the wire from the ecu to the pump and plug you tacho into it. Probably the easiest option is the 100's instrument cluster. Oh, and the 100's have all grey wiring under the dash, toyota in all their reason thought this would be a good idea for security reasons, they never gave a thought for us nutbags wanting to do motor swaps!

Give Jason @ Total Care 4wd a call - (02) 9838 9779 . He has done a few of these swaps now, and knows the in's and out's.

OK

The mechanic who does most of my work has just fitted a 1HD FTE from a 79 into a HZJ 105 (with factory lockers)
He did not need to change "all the wireing" or All the dash" A good auto elec who does a lot of this work was able to sort it all out in about a day! With the taco, he thought he would have to change it so he got the one from the 79. turned out he did not need it, the leccie was able to put something in to sort it all out.

He is now working on a 1HD FTE from a 100 series into a 75 series. same story, no major dramas with wireing.
