leaf or coil for winch challenge racing

Post by chunderlicious »

how much harder is it to control at high speeds with leaves rather than coils?

running 7/8th fox emulsions remote canistors, in a hilux, 35s, 2 inch lift with air or hydro bumps front (havent decided which yet, have a chat with a few people regarding the best for what i want to do before the order goes in)

coils will be same fox shocks front, but with GQ diffs, and emusion coilovers rear.

and its a rocky not a lux but it is pretty much the same weight and length

wat eva ya use i believe should be a high dampining and low recoil, might rectrict ya flex when crawling but will handel bettwen on speed stages and on the side slopes as a high dampining shock reduced body roll on the sideslopes so ive found from playin with ranchos, try and get a on a coil ova i think a medium spring and a stiff shock would work best adjustable shocks would realy be the way to go , im no expert but there is my 2 bobs worth

For the amount of time, money and effort you will put in to leafs you could have coils.
For fast work coils will always be better.
For slow crawling work leafs can be just as good if not better in some cases. BUT again with the amount of work needed you could have put coils under it.

no offence at all tyler but i was hoping someone like guts or chompyd would answer, someone that had raced on leaf springs and (not in guts case had changed to coils.

I run standard EFS leafs in my hilux which is only used in winch challenges, I am happy with them, stable, keeps the car low, and I can still keep up with the big boys with the fancy suspension.

Lets see for how long.
Lets see how long till you are breaking and bending stuff because of them.
Lets here you say that in 1 or 2 years time.

Don't forget to mention the chiropractors bill!

A little off topic: How would a car (lets say an HJ75 landcruiser) drive with coils on the back (say for eg. a std 5 link) and relatively standard leaves on the front? Would damping in the rear be able even out the ride?

if your worried about tunability and handling, run a coilover in the front with a triple bypass next to it, they are quickly tuned to suit hard or soft rebound, something you should consider if your going to go all out on coilovers.

i have raced on leaves doing winch comps and they suck arse, you either break them or bend them, shearing the centre bolt through was my main issue with them, once that happens they start to fall apart, and there shit for approach angle aswell.

So as not to upset Guts, his leaves do work quite well, but his coils will be even better.

I am now running 14" x 2.5" coilovers all round and in the front i have a dual setup with a smoothy (non threaded coilover shock) next to it. Not far away from tresting now.

I have been running leafs for 8 years, competed in over 35 winch challenges, Got a first in the Queensland winch challenge two weeks ago, got a 10th in the Ateco last weekend out of 45 cars (only leaf car in it), won the All Terrian Challnge Series last year for the modified section,it's very simple, nice and low, and for others who have seen the car in action can vouch that it performs quiet well. People need to see you dont have to spend a fortune to have some fun and still proviide a competive vehicle. Cheers Mike

ive seen the lux in action, with both of you driving, and i know it does quite well, although ive mainly seen leila (sorry bout spelling) drive it at the last 2 rounds of winch where she takes her time and gets through it all smootly. i just want to fly... literally

i just want the coils for jumping  and high speed control.

its going under a rocky and they are GQ diffs, braced front and rear etc. radius arm front with triaged 4 link rear. coils for now with normal shocks till its all tested and the bugs are sorted out. then ill look at smooties and triple bypass and that extravegant shit maybe even coil overs.

Well you've either got no feeling in your body or its alot tougher then mine (wouldn't be hard).
OK so what things have you replace on the hilux in that time? How many cracks etc have you welded up bla bla bla
Also how much flex have you got for when you need it? Yeah yeah I know winch challenges don't need that much.

I don't find the ride that bad, and havent had any cracks in my chassis. My weaker point was the J arm as I cant run cross over steering with the lower lift. Even with the J arm I have worked my way around that problem, so haven't bent one for ages. I'm definatly not saying leaf is better in all situations, but for winch challenges, allterrian, etc its very stable. I like it as it shows low budget cars can still compete competivitly, as the sport is starting to get out of the reach of a lot of new comers. When you say flex when you need it, It does flex quiet well, and when the wheels arent on the ground, well thats what difflocks are for. Cheers Mike

My partner you have seen drive the hilux in the Exteme Series name is Jodie. She does take it easy and some how makes it go up hills that a lot can't get up. If you want to jump your car definatly go with coils lol. Cheers

Just a Question

If you want coils for jumping .. What kind of events will you be doing?
If it just Winch Challenge i really dont see where you will be jumping?

If not just winch challenge .. then what?

I just did a coil conversion on my gu ute, and made a hugh difference. so much more responsive and way smoother. Went out on friday night at tolangie and was so much better, heaps more flex and seemed to get up tracks easy, where i had troubles before. I would just bit my tongue and go coils
