MTR tyre life?

Howdy, I have 33 inch Goodyear MTRs on the lux, and have probably done 10 to 15 thou k's on them, and they seem to be about half worn.

Is this normal or should I expect more out of them?

There are a million and one things that alter tyre life. YOu should get more than 25-30K out of MTR's, but it all depends on wheel alignment, tyre pressure, type of use etc.

My 33" MTRs (285/75x16) have done about 20k km and are probably about 80% tyread or better! Apart from the chunks ripped out offroad.

Forgot to add that this is on a 2000kg landie. I run 45psi on-road and 8-10 psi offroad. I also rotate them regularly.

I've done 40k and you can notice that they're worn. I have at least another 40k in them

They don't last long on heavy vehicles

definatly something not right. i'd look at tire pressure first.

i had a set of 30's on a jimny, when i sold them at 50k they bearly half-worn.

when you say "half worn" how much tread is left? from memory they have 16mm new

they had between 8 & 9mm, depending if they were a front or rear.

the jimny is a light car compared to a LUX, but heavy compared to a sierra. the jimny is a minimum 1200kg.

Hey isuzurover what is the max pressure of your tyres?
As my 35x12x15 mtrs have a max pressure of 35 psi?

Yeah weight is the key for tyre life. My mate has a jimny with AT's and he's done 60k and they're still brand new. He'll never have to replace the tyres from lack of tread

I usually run about 32-34psi onroad.

From memory, your tyres would have a load rating of around 108, or about 1000kg per tyre. Most 285/75-16s have a load rating around 122/123, or about 1300kg per tyre. I guess the higher load rating goes hand in hand with higher pressures.

I had MT/Rs the same size as isuzurover, bought s/h at about 90%. I sold them about 15,000 km later, around 60%. My 31" S/Ts travelled over 30,000km and were about 70% when I sold them. My 285/75 STTs are wearing about the same as the MT/Rs. All the above on a 1700kg shorty Paj, typically loaded to around 2400kg for trips.

i have 35/12.5/15's bfg muddies on my lux and and after 25,000kms you can notice they have worn but still have heaps of life left in them possibly another 20,000 minimum if they keep going at this rate. they are running at 24psi.

Can't remember - and they are in Brisbane atm so can't check. But I think it is around 50psi. I tried mid 30's when I got them, but they were too wallowy. Handling was much better at higher pressure, and they wear evenly.

I'm on my second set now, the first set i sold with probably about 1/3 tread remaining and I had covered 65k km. This is in a vehicle that weighs 2500kg as it is, driven daily. Usually have 40-45psi in them. Rotated every 15k km.

So your amount of wear doesn't seem normal....

How do you rate these tyres for an all rounder? Mud? gravel? tarmac? sand?

I'd say they're a great all-rounder. I think they were rather revolutionary when they were released, but I believe others have now caught up.

I would recommend you also consider Cooper STTs (complete with reputation for ripping off tread blocks) or the Mickey T MTZs. Toyo also make something similar, but I don't know if it's in Australia.

Got copper ST's at the moment and not very happy with them at all. I cannot decide between the MTR's or the MTZ's. I think it is 6 in one hand and half a dozen in the next.

had our 33 mtrs for over 2.5yrs about 60,000km and still enough tread to go off road around %40 left thats on a daily driven GU we run ours at 40-45 psi on road and up to 50psi when loaded and around 15psi off road

i think the max psi is 55psi

great on road and pretty good offroad and way stonger than the claws we have that get side wall chunks taken out every drive (the mtr's are damage free on the side walls) im pretty happy with em so i ordered 5x 35" mtr's on monday at $310 so there pretty well priced as well .

Had some issues with MT/R's 1st pic is of a moulding fault noticed after 450km, there were 8 tread blocks split 3/4 the way through

The 2nd and 3rd pics are of a blown sidewall, running pressure 20 psi driving on a dirt road at 35km/h in the wet when it went BANG,I couldnt find anything on the road over the last 200 mtrs that may have damaged the tyre.

The tyre with the blown sidwall had done 5000km and worn 2.6mm.

No Jeeps , it only had the fridge and what's normally is in the storage drawers daily. It wasn't even a rough track , Williamsons Spur freshly graded after the fires near Walhalla.

So what sort of wear and what pressures are people getting out of 35's?

I have a set of 35x12.5R15's and they have done 10,000km's at 35PSI on a Prado that weighs in at about 2.8 Tons.
