The crowd is great don't get me wrong, on ss5 & ss6 i had stuff yelled at me which i listened too & changed my winching plan & worked out for the better, but when your trying to hook up winch cables & people are standing in the way thats annoying & dangerous.
I heard on the radio that spectators had to be stopped going onto some stages as they were walkin on tracks whilst people where trying to drive on them at speed, might not be "you" but others were

Massive thanks to the people that put in the huge effort to run the event!
I guess we are now just waiting on results... surely we came 11th as we were not in top 10
Now for my rant!!!! Bloody spectators getting way too close! & not behind bunting!! Whats going on there??? Help the marshalls out & stay where your meant to be!!!
Who was it that Darren green almost ran over as they were on the wrong side of the bunting whilst a speed stage is going on??? Genius
When we did SS9... There were spectators way to close!!! Photo below to show! there are people standing on the track!!!

I dont think there is a comp where people dont have to be told to get of the track..................look at the WRC they have choppers fly infront to warn people of on comming cars and yet they still manage to run over a few every now and then
Every obstical worth driving has an element of risk, without risk there can be no glory!
At both of the last two competitions i have competed i have had to move spectators out of my way. In one case i hip and shouldered the spectator to the ground. I make no appology for shoving a spectator aside as i'm there to do a job the fastest wat i can. If they choose to be ignorant enough to get in my way then bad luck. At the Cliff hanger i threw my Tree trunk protector up a creek bank with out looking. It inadvertantly headed straight for T.Trudi and smacked her in the face. I felt bad and apollogised but all in all it's a risk she takes doing her job.
Likewise, I would never back off due to there being spectators beside the track. I wouldn't deliberately endanger someone either. If they're stupid enough to stand there then why should i care for there health??
Personally i think the spectator control was poor at the Ateco.
Cheers Dan

I think at some point COMPEDITORS should take a stand and just STOP untill the track is FULLY cleared, in this case if they were not allowed to rerun a stage because they stop during it because of spectators being to close and making a dangerous situtation then the organisers should not be running events. Does that make sense? and have I explained it correctlyRuffy wrote:At both of the last two competitions i have competed i have had to move spectators out of my way. Ruffy I know they shouldn't be there, I know they must be farking stupid standing that close and sometimes just plain in the way. But how would you feel if you lost it (when driving) and rolled over or drove over somebody and killed them?
You would never get over it, I know I wouldn't
Andrew I agree with you totally here.Big Red Toy wrote:The crowd is great don't get me wrong, on ss5 & ss6 i had stuff yelled at me which i listened too & changed my winching plan & worked out for the better, but when your trying to hook up winch cables & people are standing in the way thats annoying & dangerous.

I saw a pretty huge crowd getting way too close to the finish gate of the dash for cash when quite a few cars were basically hitting the last bit full noise clearing the creek bed.
All it would take is one sticking throttle cable and many would be dead.
In all fairness, it does happen in motorsports worldwide, but we should at least be aware of this by now.
Oh yeah, the lines for food sucked arse... All I wanted was a Pepsi!
BTW, damn u move quick for someone who broke his back not long ago!
Of course you'd feel bad. Who wouldn't. I guess what i should have said is that i don't focus on the crowd. It's not like i see them standing there, i just watch the track. Half of the buzz for the speccies is being so close.Guts wrote:I think at some point COMPEDITORS should take a stand and just STOP untill the track is FULLY cleared, in this case if they were not allowed to rerun a stage because they stop during it because of spectators being to close and making a dangerous situtation then the organisers should not be running events. Your right. The competitors need to make a stand. but at the time they're all too focused on racing. Safety should be paramount and some striped bunting just doesn't cut it.

Well thanks for the kind words from those nice fellows out there, to all the rest take notes from Bagsy's reply. I too was very dissapointed the way Sunday turned out. I was there to manage the tracks with regards to marshalls, not run the show. I came apparent very quick that "the run the show" dudes were there, but only to confuse us hard working marshalls. I had to change tracks, which was done in a very fine manner thanks to all the marshalls, yell, both on and off the radio, thanks to some farkwit blocking the channel and abusing us, and deal with what I think were some of the poorest decisions ever made from event management all on an empty stomach as the food that was available to us was not offered due to one of those decisions mentioned above. I'm not going to say any more on this matter but did work over the top on the weekend and even though it was only 3 teams, I did bringt he hill back for you dudes.chompyd wrote:Great Pics ........ Thanks to all that posted them up!
What a kick arse event ... still in race mode from weekend! i want to go out again and race
Oh and Matty, bring it on this weekend as I will be back there for the 3rd weekend in a row doing the sweep of the tracks to clean up the mess left by some.

I found the PGS 40# to be pretty funny being the recovery vehicle yet it was stuck there broken down. pretty flash looking truck thou however didn't really belong at a winch challenge
I think they cooked the head on it before the night stages had even started. I was at the bottom of SS1 and heard much cursing and lots and lots of steam.
So PGS didnt have a good weekend as the Zook got broke at some stage on friday also.
Not a great weekend for us. Bogger broke the transfere case input shaft, as far as we can tell,(no pulled apart yet) it has done this before as it has massive reductions low range plus another 5:1 or 3:1 selectable, we fitted a cryogenic treated input shaft last time but obviously are going to have to look into another solution, although it is a big new process transfer case.
The Zook has had transmission issues for a while, it blew one up prior to the outback that was 3 hour old(burnt 3rd gear 1:1) and Kewish with only short notice patched it up and we competed on low boost. While preparing for the Ateco and turning up the power we snapped the input shaft to the transmission. Kewish built a new trans but we had major issues with the torque converter supplied by Dominator that was stalling at 4000 rpm not the desired 2000 rpm. Unfortunatly the converter fault causes the trans oil to boil and dump out and loss of drive, not to mention driving the car was more like being fired from a sling shot as it wouldn't take up until it hit 4000 rpm. So next week trans out and try again, coming from a performance car background I know it can be difficult to get the auto just right, once we are able to get it sorted we'll be out in force, its got the go, the input shafts break at about 300 rw kw, we've got one cryo'd in it now but are going to see about a V8 input shaft to suit the V6 box.
Not the best event ever, but I had fun.
My two cents would be that there needs to be one chief who'll stand up and take responsibility for event management.
Great job Jonesy under difficult conditions.
Wasnt all bad, GQHOON won and I tuned it friday morning
Cheers
Joel

I got there Thursday lunchtime and didn't leave until after dark on Sunday.
Did i see much? just the dash for cash.
Would i be there again. HELL YEAH. Every event has both its good points and bad points. There are so many variables that it needs to be expected.
Well done to the volunteers (including organisers) and competitors. It wasn't perfect but no event is.
I had a ball, towing (dragging) the food van up the hill near the sunday stages, and going A over T crossing the creek getting ready for the sponsor runs after the dash for cash (hopefully most people were looking the other way although i doubt it)
Looking forward to a bigger and better winch challenge next year.
