Landrover onto RangeRover Q's?

Post by Badooky »

Gday Guys, im new to the rover seen, and yes i have serched, but unsuccessfully.

1. Can a series 3 ute cab fit on an early rangie chasis ( with custom body mounts) over the V8 without chopping the firewall of the cab? Will it need to be mounted slightly forward or back of where the rangie grill is/was?

2. Can rangie centres interchange with early series (non sailsbury)? ie can i put 3.54s in a series and 4.7s in a rangie diff? What are the weeknesses of the 4.7 centres? can they be made stronger?

Thanks in advance
Brett

I'd suggest tracking down a video called "A 4x4 is born". Details the building of a hybrid such as you describe. There are a few hybrids around, need to check out the rego issues however. Defintitly not a bolt on proposition however. I know of a correctly registered one which may be for sale.......

The position of the firewall and where the firewall mounting outrigger is welded on is governed by the location of the front grill/guards and the radiator mounts. I'd say it would be necessary to modify the firewall to clear the larger RR bellhousing - mine certainly was and this also necessititated a custom floor tunnel. However if you are able to weld on the new body mounts, this shouldnt be a big issue for you - there are plenty of other issues also.

Early RR diffs will interchange with Series 4.7's. 4.7's are weaker and others will have plenty to say on this. I used them in my hybrid with the ZF auto and the gearing was perfect.

I think the biggest hurdle will be the legalities of fitting and old body onto a newer chassis, if its to be registered you will need to check the regs in your state before proceeding. Even if you used the same year series body as the chassis it still may not be legal.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Mark2 what siz tyre did you run?

legality shouldnt be an issue as the series is licenced, so any change will be with newer parts & better brakes

does the engine bay of the series fit over the V8??

Check into the legality before you start - As I understand it - the year of the vehicle is determined by the chassis, not the body. So you will have to make sure the body complies with the chassis (year), not the other way around.

I have heard it mentioned that under WA rules, the easist way to do this type of mod is as an ICV (individually constructed vehicle). NFI if this is correct - in other states you have do do more than swap bodies to get an ICV classification.

Either way - to do it legally, you need to apply (in writing) BEFORE you start the mods - if you want it to be all legal and above board.

I know a few people who have built series/coiller hybrids, including bobtail (who comes on here from time to time).

But yes - 4.7 complete centres will fit a rangie casing and a rover V8 will fit inside a series engine bay.

Engineering/mods are different from state-state. Engineering in vic costs $$$, in QLD you are more restricted in what you can do, but the blue plate system is cheap. Don't know yet in WA, but think it is fairly reasonable.

V8 110 countys are cheap these days, so you could use one of these as a base for the mod - everything is there already.
