mate are you actually buying 4140 at under $4kg :? who from???
and on what machine are you doing them?? if i cant recover $120/hr minimum on mine then i dont even turn them on!! (BT50,nx76 twin pallet, H15,sl20)

Are you dreaming, the CALoffroad CV's will be the best thing for nissan EVER!!!!.

Stick to your stocker crap!! hey aren't you the genius who was saying that BB and i didn't know how to drive???[/quote]

4140 isnt chromo, n looks to me you have an old mazak POS or a hyundai? could be wrong, never said you couldnt drive so maybe you should learn to read.
If you want to quote machines you are a fool cos I've used shit you proberly havent seen so pull your head in.
Also said they would be good if they put a warrenty on them.
As far as material costs maybe your buyin from the wrong people?
Only a fool would make all there rigs parts custon cos custom parts are hard to find in the bush.

As far as these cv's are concerned they are worth lookin at if they are as good as they say but I already said that if you bother reading it. There are alot of other cost involved in the cv development to be re-imburst for, a GU front is more then adequate for most people, but there is definately a market for these.
The company I was workin for has a 200y intrgrex (thats a mazak fusion 5 axis lathe with live tooling, one of these http://youtube.com/watch?v=E1Fj1j8Sg1g& ... ed&search=) amongst others n I have done alot more complex machining then a cv. cv would be machined in 2 op's in a intergex.

You never said what sort of engineer you are, or are just a machinist?

It is the whole shooting match - 2 CV's, 1 short axle and 1 long axle.

They are probably too expensive for most, but they are dirt cheap for the bloke who is breaking a CV every weekend.

To give you an Idea of where the money is, there is tens of thousands of dollars into the man hours to solid model the pieces and write the CNC code to carve them up. The machine time to run them is then hideously expensive, these machines have lots of more profitable things they can be running when they aren't making birfield joints for our little hobby.
The material is expensive, think about how big a lump of cr-mo has to be to machine a CV joint out of it, plus the star and race and balls are all custom machined.
The material for the shafts is big $$ too. Then you have to pay for someone to heat and cryo the whole lot and get it packaged and sent to Australia.
10 complete sets were sacrificed for destructive testing before it was decided if it was even worthwhile to make these things

Realistically, probably only about 20 odd people in Australia will end up running these, everyone else will just complain about breaking CV's all the time, or keep paying for treated stockers...

In short, it's only worth making these because the European and Middle East market is so big, but I really do hope that a lot of people in aus end up running them and that they work well for them. I really like the Nissan gear, but the stock CV's are a massive, massive handicap.
At $1950 for CVs and axles they are guaranteeing only about 20 people will use them. If they could bring the costs down under a grand you would think there would be hundreds of people running them. It would be interesting to see how many people are already running Longfields in this country, therefore you would assume that just as many people running GQ diffs would be interested if the prices were similar. I know a few blokes that definitely would. This is not a whinge about the price, just an observation of how the market might respond if they could produce them at a cheaper price.
What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

if i didn't have a gu front end already i would pay that for those cv's, everybody would rather pay more for parts if they didnt break, just a matter of if they can afford it, only a poor man pays twice.

I only run 33"s with a big right boot but once its twin locked cv's are something i need to think about.

For $1950 I would consider it but again theres no warranty.

If some one put the cv where there mouth was gave a warraty, even if it was only for 35's or 37's, I'd have a set on order now.

I will only have to break 1 set of cvs and I'll be considering it very seriously because I hate fixing crap on the trail.

Cheers Nick

You'd be doing well to bust a GQ CV with 33s.

They must be giving their cars a caning to break them. I've got a 4.2 turbo diesel and 37s with ARB locker and manage to prevent CV damage. :? Anyway, back on topic. What other options for stronger GQ CVs and axles are there for people who can't spend more than a grand? I have heard rumours that Longfields can be modified to fit. Is this true? If so, what needs to be done to them to get them to fit and who does it?

4.2 T/D with 15psi from the turbo, It tries to lift the front left wheel 1st 2nd and 3rd if giving it heaps. Its got a heap more power than i expected from a GQ and its still got a turbo leak. Mechanic reackons its losing 3 to 4 pound through that.

Once thats fixed and Twin locked I will need to be careful.

I don't trash it but I drive it hard, I just HATE changing CV's. :bad-words:

It all comes down to whats availble at the time but if these guys reakon you cant break them on 40's that SHOULD mean I wont break one on 33's.

Heard longfields being mentioned a couple of times. SO before we mod anything for them to fit. What are they worth :?:

you can use longfields 80 series but there are a couple of modifications need to be done a spacer and a 80s drive flange but then if your giving it enough your axle will be the next weak link

No, you have to use the hilux sized longfields, the 80 series are too big. Then you need to have custom inner axles made up, as you'll break the stock ones constantly running longfields.

I saw the pallet-load of them in the flesh in Canberra yesterday, they are pretty damn flash looking. Fit and finish is top notch.

I think Cal just has to source the 2 styles of circlips to include in the kit, and they are ready to go. The circlips may have been there, we didn't check every box and can't remember if the machinist was supposed to supply them or not..

Question still stands. Whats it going to cost to do this?

Cos people have said that these GQ ones are expensive. But are they that much more than just the parts to do it with longfields?

Add the price of a pair of longfields, two custom one-off inner axles, a pair of 80 series drive flanges, a bit of lathe time to part off two Nissan freewheeling hubs at 20mm (spacer) and to part off 2 thin thrust washers off a bit of bronze for inside the knuckle, or surface grind the Nissan item (Nissan washer is too thick).
I was going to do it for my own vehicle, but the cost of the shafts was prohibitive, so I sold the car and built something with bigger axles

Heres some pics of some of the gear, final price came in at $1830.

Thanks Wendle. FOr something that bolts in and if it does break can be replaced with a std GQ item it sounds like its a pretty good price. As it want take to many std CV smashings to get up to that price.

Aren't you running Yuri CV's Wicked? If so why would you want to upgrade, are they not strong enough for you!?

I think these CV's look the bomb. But with anything you do to a diff...make one part stronger and the next part is the weak link. IMHO if you are breaking a lot of CV's you should think about how you drive your truck. Drive it a bit differently and you will likely not break so many CV's.

I think we could all agree Patrol diffs are strong as stock...but if you need something stronger why not just consider putting in some D60's?

Personally if I had $15k to drop on diffs I would just dump the Patrol diffs and run PortalTek's. But $15k is a huge ass chunk of change to drop on diffs.

I run Yuri MQ cv's but because of the C200 Centre i'm changing to a GQ front. nothing to do with the Cv's.

D60's lol 1 diff is over $5000 + just and that's not in the car or even at your place. (austraila)

As for $15K on diffs! who'sspendin that! you's get twin hydro steerin mog portals in for that man!

i have been working on the superior eng. GQ extracab, it has quite a few goodies on board now, long arm rear with hyd/over rear coil setup, and my new hyd adjustable race runners are going in after tufftracks rd3. i am also twin-sticking the tcase for rear burns!!! and trying to mod a GU steering box to run 2500psi so that we dont need hyd assist.

yeah just a few basic mods ;)
