87 hilux engine what should i do

Ok heres the deal my car is an 87 dc hilux YN67 in make. The engine is a 4cyl petrol and is nearing 400k kms.. I have a couple of options both of which need many an opinion and advice b4 they happen.

a. - keep existing engine (possibly get it rebuilt) (also jsut bought a few things to keep it going (alt, batt etc)
- put extractors and new exhaust sys (needs something manifold is falling off)


b. - attempt an engine conversion using a 22r engine from another hilux.
(the syncro mesh for 2nd gear is ----ed also so a newer tcase would help this ?)


anyone attempted any of those solutions ?

I had a yn67 with the 4y motor, after spending thousands on a rebuild and adding a webber carby and exhaust it went heaps better. About a year later the head gasket shat itself. After this i just bit the bullet and went commodore v6, best decision ever! Though i was able to do all the work myself so took a bit of the sting out of the cost.

I am by no means a fan of the commo v6, but I have to admit I was thinking the same thing. It's a tried and tested conversion.

so how much did that cost you, engine and adapter kit ? cause ill be attempting this myself as well...
i had a look a while ago and the adapter kit cost nearly a grand i thought and the engine roughly half that? seemed like a lot for me so i am looking at seeing if the 22r fits better with less adapter parts needed.

From memory the marks kit was about $1300 and you could proly pick up a series 2 engine with all bits you need for around $500. Fair bit more to it than just those couple things, easy but fiddly. I'm using a dyna box and cruiser diff which upped the $. Have a look on marks adaptors site, its got most info you'll need. Good luck, Chris.

I will probley get roasted but a mates got a holden 202
with dellow bellhousing so suit lux, it was out of a 86 single cab
was running fine and I bet he would part with it for farkall.

3RZ-FE. is expensive to install with kits etc ?
I read you attach to t/case then weld brackets for engine mount where it then sits. :shock: maybe not the best way for me to retain a rw car

Ok so basically im after the easiest (helps with cost), good power upgrade from the 4y, economy wise no worse lol, and cheapest engine conversion for my car...

anyone know what engines just bolt onto existing 4y engine mounts and align to the t/case perfectly ?

Cost me just over $2000 for the 3RZ-FE conversion. 2.7L fuel injected petrol.
Complete Motor - With Clutch
Computer
Fuel Tank
Wiring Harness
Radiator
Bell Housing

It will bolt up to the older 5 speed and transfer.

did u know how to do it or was there a guide u followed ie previous build up thread ? this could be the steepest mechanical learning curve i will undertake
ever haha :? but hey im keen.

if it bolts straight to existing mounts thats awesome, all i hear about the 3RZ-FE are good reports about durability etc.

i guess ill start looking for an engine. :)

anything i should look/out for ?? faults, certain parts that are built better ?

I got mine out of a 2002 2wd from the wreckers that I PM you. If you don't want to cut off the engine mounts off the chasis and then reweld them on you will have to make up an adaptor plate. Easier to cut off the mounts and reweld on. I can go through it with you once you have the engine.

EFI which in few words means more torque and slight bit more displasement the power out put is a fair bit more than the 22r Willy Hilux will probaly know the specs on what they put out if not i'll try look toomorow

22r doesnt even compare to a 3rz. EFI is just the start of it, the 2.7 puts out 105Kw and makes peak torque at 4200 rpm from memory not sure on the actual torque figures off the top of my head. I am looking to put one in my 85 I am building. I had one in my 98 before I went the V8 and was very happy with it, it was a great motor.

....u can get 22re's also, they came in 84-86 rt142 coronas and somem other smaller toyotas.

good engines, just finished puttin 1 in a 1980 short wheel base luxxy, going for wiring this week.


so far the donor car has cost us $700 and a new flywheel $150 came with clutch coz donor car was auto.

wiring was quoted at $500 but will end up being cheaper.so whats that about $1350. not bad, should be a ncie reliable motor.......then boost :D

22re < what does the 're' stand for ?

not attempting wiring yourself ?

did the engine fit in perfectly to mounts etc ?

The E in the engine code would be for electronic fuel injection
5L is mechanical injection as 5LE is efi,
22R carby 22RE is efi.
22RE may have also come out in some of the hiace/liteace vans of same era but don't hold me to it

22re bolted to bellhousing fine,. u will need a 22r flywheel but can use any clutch 18r thru to 22r engines.

we used the corona engine mounts there is 3 pairs of holes the engine mouts uses 2 of em, so we just shifted the mounts forwards to the frontmost set of holes.

On the passeneger side we had to drill out 2 holes in the engine mount but it fitted, then space up the alternator bracket to suit coz the front 2 holes r for the alt, we bolts the alt bracket over the engine mount n spaced the front 2 bolts on the alt bracket.

sounds confusing but if u had it infront of u, u would know it str8 away.

also we had to add a return fuel line, which was easy enuf.

just gotta bolt starter on n then its ready 4 auto elecs

sounds like the 3rz is the way to go, over the commo v6 and 22r/e, cheers for all help guys ill be in contact about this again when i find an engine :D

edit: for easiest install and most gain that is.
