Rear Maxi Problem

Howdy,

My rear maxi maxed out yesterday and didn't unlock.

I new the diff lock had not relesed when the light wouldn't go out and driving in circles was chewing the crap outta the ground. At first i thought it had a little windup so i jacked the rear wheels... Then i toock one of the rear axles out (short one).... then i open the filler plug on the rear diff and jammed a screw driver in and tried pushing the dog clutch over.... after that I had a hissy fit and drove home. I relesed the vaccum, cut power to the mac valve after about 50 mtr it seemed to realese itself ...... WTF

dunno wtf is going on.... havn't tried fixing it yet but i did notice that one of the wires to the macvalve was a little fried.

anyideas??

how close are your vac lines to ny heat?. I have had in the past the vac lines suck flat due to heat from to exhust. try this.

i had a diff breather melt a while ago from heat from the rear axle housing.

I'll check it out

Is this a maxi drive locker or a Jac Mac locker. If you can get to the dog clutch through the diff filler then it sounds like a jac mac??

But either way, I too think you have got problems with the vacuum side of things.

When you tried to move the dog clutch with the screw driver were the wheels still bound up?? Or was one off the ground. If one was off the ground then it was probably vacuum that was stopping you from moving the dog clutch so it could be a faulty vacuum valve or something.

If its a Maxi Drive locker then it could be a twisted axle (or a vacuum problem)

Had this problem in my old 84 which had the maxi-drive in the rear (read HAD because it's on the old man's 88 Rangie now).

My problem was exactly the opposite, mine wouldn't lock. it would unlock, so I locked it in for a weekend once and just push in the button, and it was all good.

Got a new hose from MD and fixed the prob.

Yes, the hoses don't like heat. Where mine was set up (like most) was near the exhaust and looked like yours did.

I also had one of my black vacumme hoses (near the tank) do the same. Good to see you fixed the problem

Dude Your housing shouldn,t Have enough heat to melt breather hose.

Bearings el fokoad.

The pretty purple colour on those timken cases hasn't been done with an air brush hehe :finger:

turns out the melted diff breather was from the exhust squasing it on full artic...

I like purple bearings.... i collect them and take out the old silver ones..... :D
