i have a TB42 with what i thought was a leakin head gasket or crack in the head somewhere because i changed the crank seal and found white gum aroiund the inside of the seal.
After removing the tappet cover i found a large amount of goo up on the inside of the cover, i drained the oil and it was a dark grey almost black colour nearly what u would call normal. i found some more white muck in the hoses coming from the intake to the tappet cover also but that didnt really tell me anything
I removed the head today and found nothing, the block seems ok still flat same with the head, no distortion or cracks that i can see. the head did have a lot of black crap around #6 but it didnt seem to be a leak more so like the gasket had just left residue on it but there was a small amount of water and oil in #6 exhaust port when i removed the exhaust manifold, so my questions are
1 do they have a habit of crackin the head somewhere hard to see?
2 is there something im missin that could cause water to get in the oil other than oil cooler (ill check it tomoro if i cant find anything else)
if anyones got any ideas on this id value some advice
cheers!

The good news is .........
cracks are often not visiable to the naked eye
the bad news is ...........
You've got a cracked head, around number 6 exhaust port I'd say.

I have the same problem in my RD2.8T .
So I removed the head and got it crack tested which came back good as new .
Than replaced all gaskets thinking it must have been the head gasket as you do.
And its still mixing oil and water .
Ive checked the oil cooler and turbo and all seem good.
So im no help to you

GQ with big nuts
yeh well i inspected the shite out of it and couldnt see a thing, even talked to a head specialist and he told me where they normally crack and no sign and he also said a crack that would cause that much water would be easily visible coz it happened to suddenly, im starting to wonder if the water cooled intake manifold has somethin to do with it
