Front replacement speakers- any ideas?

Not a 4WD question, but seeing as things are quiet:

What have people done in Ferozas for replacement front speakers? Has anyone tried anything different from the under dash mounting location? (eg door mounting using pods.....) Is anyone using component speakers?

personally, I havent worried about the front speakers. The size of car means a good set at the rear is all I needed. I run Kenwood 7"x10" off a sony 200watt amp and Kenwood head unit. Excellent sound with some awesome bass.

I am a rock pig though, and doof doof may need more.

A nice set of 6" and some tweeters on the dash would give a good all round sound. But run of a good system with amps etc. Front speakers straight off teh head unit just is not good.

The stock front ones are 4". I've blown one of mine and need to replace it :|

Friend of mine had spacers in the door to hold 6" mids and the split tweeters were on pillar at the sides of the windscreen and angled to set the correct "stage" for sound..

I put a pair of six and a half inch Boston two ways in the rear. Then I stuck some JVC 60W 2 ways in the stock front location, running straight off a 45x4 JVC head unit, goes pretty good, but it wont win any competitions.

There isnt a lot of places to stick amps into the feroza, so i wouldnt bother, especially cos mine always has boxes of shit in the boot, and camping gear getting stowed everywhere.

I wouldn't mind putting in an amp to drive a sub in my rig. I don't run back seats any more so not a huge issue...

Was thinking of getting a sub and box, mounting it right behind the center console (sub facing forward) and putting the amp on the back of the box.

Could be simply disconnected and removed when going offroad etc...

The rear speakers in my car seem to be great as it is, just need to fix those fronts and get a bit more base

I have installed a st of blaupunt 6" components in the front door. Sounded great in the store but once you have these in an small car the high pich sound is just to much so I moved them to the back and now running blaupunt two way in the front huge improvment on the sound. Running straight of the Blaupunt cd headunit 40x4. sounds great

know i posted about my stereo setup on here somewhere.... an i cant find it.. so go look for urself.. lol... but if u really need to know.. ask... as for the amp.. pfft.. i have an amp an its under my rear seat! fits jus fine! as for the 4 inch speakers.... leave em.. they aint worth gettin to or replacin em cuz u'll jus blow em again... i have a mtx marine speaker mounted on my dash an it works great... stays in place an adds more to the dash. thats what replaced the 2 4 inch.. an it can handle alot of power. so i'm set... so if u guys need more info... or if theres enough demand.. i'll go look it all up again.

I have a pair of Kenwood 7x10 4 ways in the back and a pair of pioneer 6" 3 ways in the front door (about where the map pockets used to be). I disconnected the existing 4" speakers cause they sounded crap. Both sets only just fitted in. The front ones needed 1" spacers so i could still wind the window down. They are fed by a Clarion head unit and it sounds great.

Lots of different set ups there!

At the moment I've just upgraded the head unit to a MP3 Cd player (beats the old factory tape deck ). My rear speakers have been replaced with some two ways (6.5"? same size as stock) I had from another car, fronts are stock. I've got a sub and bridgeable amp that I could add on........

A lot of the top stereos seem to go for mid range/ tweeters in front, full range plus sub in rear. That way you get the sound stage from the front speakers and the low freqs filling in from the rear. I've been toying with the idea of a set up like that.

From when I put the central locking in the front door I noticed there's stuff all space in there for mounting a speaker- so a pod or spacer is a must for door mounting.

At the moment I'm favouring two way splits (components) for the front. They are available with a 4" midrange that would bolt in the dash spot- but it would be angled badly and have no enclosure behind it. 4" is probably a bit too small too?

the setup u jus discribed.. that is exactly how i have mine set with 5 speakers. an it works great. sounds awesome. i jus need to upgrade my amp an sub for a bit more power. but other than that... its pretty sweet. an yes the 4 inch is too small.. they cant really handle much power of any kind so u'd end up blowin em anyways.. u SHOULDNT go less than 6 inches.. but i know that SOME 5 inch speakers are out there that can handle almost as much power as 6. if it was me.. i'd jus go for the 6. makes life ALOT easier.

It depends on what kind of system you want, DOOF DOOF, or one that plays real muzac. I replaced the radio/cassette with a CD tuner, and mounted a new pair of 4 inch speakers in the original placement in the dash, and a pair of 6 inch in the rear 1/4's. I wasnt after a boom box, just to be able play CD's with reasonable quality. Replacement of the front speakers means complete dash removal.

I've got a 50x4 200W sony eXplode cassette player & 2 200watt 2 way momentum speaker for the front doors & 2 400watt lanzar 6x9 four way quaraxial speakers for the back which need 2 be fitted at some stage. DOOF DOOF

rockn.... runnin an amp would be a good idea... more power means better, cripst sound. fellas.. be careful what u put in there. i've learned over the last 14 months that the us rockys/ferozas are VERY easy to break into via picking the lock through the window. my rozsa apparently got broke into for the second time in 14 months, which happened last nite but i did not find out until tonite. they slowly popped the lock, popped the hood, an cut the wires to my alarm, then took out the light bulb in the cab, proceeded to remove my stereo (with face plate in glove box), took my subs but didnt get my amp, thank god. they also forced their way into my glove box (which was locked) an took my face plate as well... again, thank god they didnt take my pay check that was in there, or my tools... but they did take my cds... so fellas. be careful.... it seems the rocky is easy to break into so if u can, have an alarm installed an when u do (or if u alraedy do), make sure the pins on the bottom of the doors are also wired to the alarm as well. that way, if the door is even opened, the alarm is triggered. i learned this the hard way an that is what i'm going to do next time. good luck.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but why wasn't your alarm wired up to the door switches?! (and you mustn't have a bonnet switch either?) Get yourself a microwave interior motion detector- that way your alarm will stop theives even with the roof off.

I bought a security coded head unit, rather than a detachable face model as most thieves realise people are too lazy to carry the faces around with them. There's always a good chance the face will be in the glove box if it hasn't been left on the headunit.

microwave interior motion detector? wtf is this? is this some thing u heard off of the sci-fi channel or somethin? an no i didnt have the alarm wired into the door switches.. i still need to replace those. (would have ran up another $30 plus labor an couldnt afford it at the time) i jus simply made the alarm more sensitive to compsiate for it.. much good that did. i had already planned on rewiring those door switches an gettin em attached to the new alarm (it seems the thieves also took the core of the alarm as well?? will find out tomorrow) i also found MORE damage to my interior today... talked with my insurance agent an he said according to blue book.. the rig itself isnt worth much ( blue book!) an he said considering the damage i have suffered an how rare parts are.. theres a possiblity that my rig may get totaled! will find out when an adjustor contacts me so he/she can take a look. will prolly be around thursday or so.

Microwave motion detectors are around AUS$80 for a dual zone one and work like a radar. They detect movement within an adjustable area and will penetrate plastic, glass etc, but not metal. Very good for convertibles as you can leave the top down and when someone reaches in the alarm will first let off a warning beep, and then if they go further, fully go off.

They can be added onto most alarms.

Replacement of the front speakers means complete dash removal.

Initially that is what i thought as well, but after scoping the situation, I have found an alternate solution:

1) Remove glovebox completely
2) Remove panels under steering column (and a few other bolts in that general area)

OK, starting with the passenger speaker (due to ease). If you look under the dash you will see that the factory speakers are mounted to some sort of metal plate, which is then mounted to the plastic dash panel.

Unplug the speaker (duh!) and holding the metal plate to the dash are 2 screws (one up top above the speaker, and the other down bottom). Using a stubby philips head screw driver, you should be able to reach your hand through the glove box compartment area and unscrew the plate. Bascially if you feel around you will find out what I am talking about.

Once the plate/unit is out you will notice that there is a foam surround. Although the foam is a good idea you will have to tear this off in order to access the screws to remove the factory speakers from the plate. IMO it is a good idea to replace the foam when you put the aftermarket speakers in.

So basically once you have mounted your new speakers on the plate, carefully re-install the plate under the dash, and thats pretty much it!

Accessing the speaker on the drivers side is a bit of a pain in the ass, but can be done. The top screw is what will screw you around (no pun intended). By putting you head under the dash you will see the bottom screw fairly easily. I also found that removing the bolt on the side of the dash (viewable when the door is open), is a good idea. Gives you a bit of "leverage" when pulling on the dash

And thats pretty much it. All in all it took me about 1.5hrs to complete the task, and the results are fantastic!

Just some other advise:

Depth wise there is plenty of room under the dash to install speakers with chunky magnets. Go for a decent speaker with a decent size magnet.

Do not use the factory speaker wiring. It is a very thin gauge, and will not suit amplification purposes.

Make sure you screw the plates into the dash tight! Last thing you want is your speakers rattling around. May even be an idea to put a bit of glue on the screws to ensure this

So thats part one of my audio install. Hopefully in the next week or so I will mount some 6x9's into the rear door (facing the passenger). Unfortunately the factory locations for the rear speakers are quite bodgy, thus this is why I am going for this option.

Man, That sux about the whole dash thing - I have a pioneer (I think) 40wx4, though the dweeb that installed it (it came with the car) didn't hook it up right so it doesn't remember anything - I need to pull it out si I can connect the second power wire to the clock circuit, so it keeps memory!

Car came with 6/9's in the back, bit dented, but the interior was shot, speakers on the floor, all ripped up. Just purchased some 'el cheapo' 6 inchers - good enough sound (This is not my primary car - just the 'errand runner' and 'beach toy'), not good enough to care if it rains with the roof off - throw em out, buy anouther set....... Just finisheing the new interior, but having trouble remounting the new panels!

Got a new set of 4 inchers for the front, though I wonder now......

i do not understand how the size of a car has anything to do with making the speaker sounding 'high pitched'? way of installation and tuning will have effect on the speakers sound output.

for sure, even with door mounted speakers. when i was doing comp systems we put a medium density foam on the outside skin of the door behind the speaker, it helped with the sound quality of the cars system.

if tour gonna fit a sub and amp your gonna need a decent set of speakers up front or its gonna be all "doof doof", with your sub it would sound alot better firing to the rear rather than to the front

I just bought my Feroza, previous owner had some shitty 6 inch super cheap speakers installed in the front doors, passenger side was falling out so I replaced with some pioneer 2 way coaxials. Unfortunately, he has cut out the hole on the passenger side about 1cm higher then the drivers side, and it fouls on the window. The speakers are right next to the seat, right where your hip would be, so im sure its not the best for accoustics.

I plan to get a new set of door skins at some stage and move them up where the map pockets would be, provided they can be removed without leaving shocking looking holes

Running pioneer 6x9s in the back and a pioneer mp3/cd player 4x50 watts. Sounds awesome. Just got a Kicker 12 inch sub, knocked a 1.2cu foot box up to sit in behind the back seat to one side, amp will sit under the drivers seat. Got quick release mechanism knocked up for the box, 30 seconds to install or remove!

But yeah, those stock 4 inch speakers are puss. For some reason they were still hooked up so it had 6 speakers total. Ripped the wires out quick smart !

I'm running 4" speakers in the stock locations and they pump..

Mind you they are 2 Ohm Soundstream SPL's.. the magnet is as big as the rest of the speaker. Mounted the tweeters on the dash and they kick along nicely... No where nears as nice as my old system *sighs* but they suffice, I also have 6x9" Audibahns in the rear.

I made up new rear panels to mount them.. When I finally get around to mounting some lighting in them for passengers and boot space, I'll trim them in grey vynl.

Dunno when I'll put a sub in, it's been sitting in it's original packing box waiting for me to install it....

It certainly sounds like the speaker install in the doors, was a complete balls up hack job... Straties perhaps.. hahaha

No more car audio talk, or I'll start missing being in the car audio scene again...
