Cutting Guards

hi
i am looking into trimming my guards so i can fit in some larger diameter tyres
i have read about trimming them but i am unsure of how to
how do i cut them
my car has lips on the guard and if i trim the guard how does the guard then attach to the inner guard
any help would be great

i've done it with my zook

first unfold the guard lip so that the outer panel is as flat as possible
mark where all the spot welds are and cut/grind them off to separate the inner guard
then mark your new guard circumference out clearly
cut little lines towards the edge of your new circumference so that you have little flaps to fold
open out the outer panel flaps to gain access to the inner guard
now slice lines along the edge of the inner guard to you've got flaps on there to fold too
make sure the flaps alternate with the outer panel to provide more strength and better sealing
trim the edge of the inner guard flaps so that when it is folded up, the edge just touches the outer panel
fold up the inner flaps and fold the outer flaps over them
drill and rivet together (or weld)
seal the gaps with silicone then paint

Do as NAM says but make sure you use paintable "silicone" ie sikaflex - it sticks and waterproofs better anyway.

and if you do it this way make sure you weld the little cuts or real soon the guard will crack or tear wear the little cuts ends and you will have 2 guards not one. Better to hammer and dolley the new edge a lot stronger and no cuts

Or possibly drill holes along the fold line and then cut up to the holes thus reducing the chances of the cut continuing?

Be very careful of the silicon you buy as most of have an acid in them and actually initiate rust/corosion..... READ THE DIRECTIONS FIRST !

Technically it isn't a silicone you want. Sikaflex make a variety of products, the one you want is the polyurethane caulk/sealant/adhesive for bodywork, or you can buy a brush/trowel on body drip check sealant. For best results, etch prime the surfaces to be sealed/caulked before applying the product, you will get better adhesion and rust prevention. The sikaflex polyurethane product is available in a variety of colours, and is paintable (prime first, then colour/basecoat over the primer).
