Help me make a decision - Road legal, truggy or buggy

I have been trying to rebuild my chopped 4runner to be fully road legal. It will have a rear 4-link suspension with coil-overs. For this to happen in WA I need pre-approval (which I have), engineered and then lane change and brake tests to get it legal. So a bit of work and cost is involved. Now I am interested in doing comps, so I will need an exo and other mods which aren't going to be cop friendly. The comps I am interest in is more rock crawling, but in WA this sport is just starting so a buggy is not really required at the moment.

So the dilemma do I continue building it road legal or make it a truggy or sell it and buy a buggy? I don't have the time/skills to build a buggy from scratch to I will need to buy a frame and build it from there.

If I go the truggy I will be using air shocks instead of coil-overs. I will need to buy a tow vehicle and trailer if I go a truggy or buggy.

I am leaning towards a truggy because if I go to all that work/cost to get it properly licensed, I will use it in a comp and then probably be a magnet for a yellow by the cops. So is it worth it?

I think if you want to compete in rooster Crawling events then scrap this and build a buggy. A truggy or Full body Rig wont be competitive (unless you stick to a class if it exists).

I think If you are committed, then build a buggy.
If not fully commited street legal.
A truggy is always too much compromise, the good thing is its relativly cheap in comparison to street legal or full buggy. IMHO its only good for fun on the weekend on private land.

Whatever you do, spent the cash wisley and dont do it twice.

FYI some I know of that tried to compete in Truggy or FBRs are Redzook, Zac and Shane (ex-firetruck), I think LJExtreme, Cheezy, Gonads and some others.

All are now buggies.

well i got a yellow on my zook for havin big tyres and lift blah blah blah, and its not even big compared to alot of the other 4bys runnin around in wa, im building a buggy and am goin to to it to were ever i want and for comps, it will be better in the long run and i wont have the hassles of being pulled over by sum smart ass copper, so go the buggy :armsup:

Can you afford a Tow Rig?
Can you afford a Car Trailer?
Can you afford the rego for the above?
Do you have room to store a buggy/truggy, tow rig and a Car trailer?
Do all your wheelin spots have a place to put your car trailer and tow rig while your out playing?
Once its all done will you be bothered to go out cause you'll have to get the buggy ready, put it on the trailer, drive there, lock up the tow rig, make sure its safe and secure, drive the buggy then do it all again to get home, where as a modded (not insane ofcourse) 4x4 get in and go.
How many buggies go weekend wheelin when they have a spare couple of hours?

Build it as a truggy with bits you can use at a later stage on a buggy.

Drive it as a truggy, smash it up then build a buggy with the good bits.

How do you guys go for places to wheel unregistered vehicles? This would be the biggest factor to me.

road legal truggys are crap


because if you push the car to the limit(whats the use of having it if you dont push it to the limit) your gunna roll and or break and then have to try to limp home

so your gunna need to trailer everywhere anyways
so if you are gunna trailer wats the use of rego

build a buggy itll cop the abuse better then a truggy and safer and lighter

or do what sierra jim said : Build it as a truggy with bits you can use at a later stage on a buggy. Drive it as a truggy, smash it up then build a buggy with the good bits.

Mainly only because if you want to compete in most comps its required (most comps meaning TT - NT ...etc etc ........also prob could get away with a few trail runs after trailing there with out as much issue of being busted by rangers/cops ...than in a buggy .......there pro's and con's it just depends what suits YOU @ THE TIME .....fawk everyone elses opinion ;)

I love extreme rock crawling wave .. but just think also I love drive my rig, you can go hard core .. and play in a " sand box " it's just only for your fun ..

Did you are married .. are you thinking in share your fun with your wifef and childs .. ?

A streed legal rig could be a fun for your family and fun to drive every where, not your DD so if you broke you can let at home until you fix.

To answer your questions yes. The one thing is that I will only be able to get 33's registered. So if I was to go wheeling on the weekend I will need to swap to the 37's and risk driving on the road to the track. Or I have to cart the tyres to the track.

Chris this is what most of the guys are doing now taking a small trailer down with the bigger tyres in it makes for a lot comfier ride and less chance of cop bait. Lot easier to hide the little trailer aswell.

If I was to build a buggy it would be a 2 seater (pro-mod). So nothing different to what I have now a 2 seater 4runner.

This is what I have been thinking. I will eventually get into a buggy and a lot of the gear I have in the 4runner could be put into a buggy.

I have had this 4runner for about 14 years (showing my age :D) and has 3 rebuilds, this is the 4th one :roll: So I still have some attachment to it and probably not ready to get rid of it.

Chris I say go truggy, bugger the roadworthyness.
As said you can always use the bits to go full tube later on but I dont think the rock crawling scene is big enough in WA yet. Give it a couple of years and it may get there.
Another thing to think of is that a lot of the WA comps require a licenced vehicle so you will need to keep the rego paid up on the truggy.

Ill check out our insurance coverage for the up comming comps for you Chris to see if the cars do need to be licenced or not.Id go truggy with what you have for now if you enjoy going full on and rolling it run it till its completly smashed then go full buggy.So far my zuk thing has laid down 5 times much more fun to get out and go oh well put it back on its wheels and carry on .You can also go do anything you want with out the need to think how much is this going to cost to fix if I stuff up.

So far both myself and Hayden trailer our rigs dont have a hassle with places to stash trailers.With the couple of other cars that are also geting built there now should be like minded people to go play with.

Jbel down in Cow town has a buggy built and ready to go,Ausyota is building then yourself and Bazooked.There is a green rocky buggy down in Brunswick .I think a few more people will go this way once we have the first rock event this could open peoples eyes to what is possible on a small bugget with out building a full on buggy.

is there enough support (competitors) in WA to support full comps for rock crawling?

So you wont be 1 of 6 cars in every event with the winner already known?

Cause if it doesnt take off you will end up with a weekend only buggy and still need something to tow it there and nothing to wheel.

LOL shudda up ghe.y buggy fawker :finger: .....yes its regoed ....well it will be re-regoed shortly (this week) to hopefully compete ay Nissan trials .... but @ a guess unless it aids in a sale it wont be re regoed again after this time .........and then the next 4x4 step for me will be OZrock/ Werock competition in a A1 buggy :cool:


But as I said to the intial Post ........taking info of others is sometimes good but most of the time you need it to suit what you want to do with the rig ......and this can only be determined BY YOU ;)

i voted road legal, but i really don't know how much you want to throw your car at things till it breaks, nor how many comps are over in wa. for me, a regoed car is more flexible in what you can do. depending on the mods you end up doing, couldn't some/a lot of the major components be swappped to a buggy later?
