It's a joke.
You can buy a hand held OBD II scanner for $65 off eBay, delivered from China in 10 days.
In the US, walk into any auto store on a Saturday and pick up an OBD scanner, similar price.
Australia? What's OBD?
Can anyone offer any advice on how or where to buy one? - cheap hand held or PC interface w/ software.
Only searched online so far - ENGTEK have an interface for $220 but can't call them until Monday.
My '99 4.0 has been off the road since Tuesday with bad misfire/rough running/lack of power but starts first pop with steady idle (apart from misfire)
No errors on dash. I have NO access to e-diagnostics, as I refuse to allow the LR gimps to assess problem using my e-wallet / their TEST'cheque'BOOK.
Have already changed spark plugs (some gaps out to 1.65mm) changed all 8 leads (one tip/boot corroded) but no difference. Cleaned out IAC valve (slightly clogged) checked physical connections for TP, CKP and K sensors. My first reaction was the fuel filter, but it is located inside the tank with no access hatch and I have about 85 litres on board.
With all these sensors on board and the available fault codes, surely an OBD scanner will help me elimate things that are not causing the problem. I would hate to remove a full fuel tank for no reason and still be left without a clue.

Try substituting from a known working example to test.

Yep, sounds like a MAF sensor problem, I have been through 4 of them in the past 15months, luck I'm still under warranty.
As for OBD, a mate bought this recently

It works well and picks up all the fault codes and can clear them + it works as a trip computer. Only works on the V8 LR motor not the TD5.

Geez you blokes are bloody cluey.
Thanks to your suggestions, I do beleive I've sorted the problem.
Not having a scan tool, I just disconnected each component/sensor one at a time to see what the differance was.
Disconnecting the MAF sensor entirely allowed the engine to idle and rev smoothly, although I haven't driven it yet.
Ironically everything I replaced/rebuilt was half stuffed anyway - spark plugs, leads, 1x knock sensor, dirty IAC valve. Good learning experience too, understanding the role of each EMS component and the back-up strategies for sensor failure.
Thank eff I didn't pull the fuel tank out, would have total waste of time.

What model is year is your mates disco. This is the first I've heard of personal obd scanners so I'm looking into it now so I can fix my own problems. Does anyone know where to obtain a list of what each of the fault codes represent. I was just doing a bit of research then on OBD II and most cars post '96 should have it, some later models now have CAN OBD II. Although there are about three (could be more) different protcols used (GM, ford and chrysler I think it said all use different ones). We ae the importers of the ScanGauge - and I'd actually be curious to know if they can work on the Rovers as I am slowly compiling a alist of compatabile vehicles (it's a large combo of make/model/engine/year variations asa you could imagine).....
