Another day on the Isuzu powered 110

Post by andrew e »

Got up this morning, and figured id test my electric water pump for my intercooler on the 4bd1t.

Pulled out the pump and it tested ok, and then thought " i'll tidy up that wiring from where i removed the AC, re-run my temp sensors, and tie up loose ends".

That turned into Piping up my twin safari snorkels which have just been sitting there looking tuff. Used bits off 200tdi and 300tdi defenders, and a highly modified Isuzu 110 donaldson aircleaner box.

While that was out, i figured i'd replace my intake manifold with the larger one off a NPR truck i had laying around.

To remove the manifold, i had to take the injector pipes off, So i figured while i was there i'd move the fuel filter back down the front of the engine.

1/2 hour job ended up taking all day.

Yes i got it finished before dark, still yet to test drive though, curious if the twin snorkels make any difference.

What a day. i'll have pics up of the new manifold soon when my knuckles stop bleeding.

I got a bad habit of doing that, I got an even worse habit of being half way through something spotting something else, then not finishing either until the next time I get to have a crack at it.

no fueling yet, i'll get it dyno tuned within the next few weeks. I'm still nervous about playing with the pump. Turboglide in woolongong seem to know what their talking about.

Looks good.

What is the difference between the stock intake manifold and the one you fitted?

Tell me about it.

I pulled my engine, gearbox and LT230 about two months back for a quick spruce up and gearbox swap.
That's turned into a clean and paint of almost every engine part and monkeying around inside fuel pumps.

Still haven't got to the gearbox yet, but I'm still waiting on a spline cutting for the adaptor shaft.

When I'm done it'll be soo clean I'll be embarrassed to show anyone.

bigger diameter inlet, and inlet is in the direct center of the manifold, as opposed to more to one end.

I'm only being fancy using it, i doubt it makes any noticable diference. I was at a isuzu wrecker once, and told the guy who worked ther what i was doing, and he told me about the different size inlets. cost me 20 or 30 bucks i think.

Love to see pics of your Isuzu beasts Kiwi and ben.

I dont have the luxury of taking mine off the road, although it would be fun, I cant drive the lockless to work :D . Everything i do must be in 24 hour lots, gee it makes it hard, and you get some close calls sometimes. The upside is that i always have the motivation (you cant help it) and you chew through your job list.

Andy - mine is embarrasingly stock at the moment (still na - but I have tweaked the fuelling ;) ). Currently building a shed/workshop. As soon as that is finished the turbo and Sanden compressor will go on, and I will post pics.

Well worth registering on 4BTswaps.com they've got an Isuzu 4BD1T/4BD2T section and they made me the moderator.

Here's the pic. More bling to come (gold injector lines etc).

Bloody hell what a difference i've noticed in the last week. I'm not sure what mod it was, but the difference is huge. I dont think it was the manifold, i think it was more to do with the twin snorkels. I also bored another hole in the donaldson aircleaner housing, where the origional water drain thingie was to accept the 2nd snorkel. To give you an idea, hills that i had to near floor it up, i now have to back off to stop getting a speeding ticket! And i havent even had the fuel turned up yet!

I Also just bought one of these to play around with and screw the boost up to 9.5 or 10psi. Hopefully it will arrive before it gets dyno tuned on the 20th.

So what did your EGT's do?
If you're getting more air in, then they should drop at any given power level.

IMO the best way to regulate boost is to cut and thread the wastegate actuator rod.

Thats done as per factory on the rb20 turbo ive got already. To adjust it though, you have to take the turbo off, and i'll quickly run out of thread (it screws into a blind hole). I want to set it up that i can adjust the boost while driving.

its got a tyre smoking 54kw at the treads now! (in 4wd with CDL in and 35s) Torque is a bit more impressive though.

So what are the losses in a defender drivetrain worth?

But looks like a big % increase you've got there. Did they alter boost or just fueling?

No idea the losses, but 35s are a big heavy tyre, and 15x10s have a 10mm centre. The performance is great now compared to before, and thats all i care. They just did the fueling, boost was already capped at 9-10psi
