Leaky 8274

Post by tiggr »

Greetings to all , i have found my 8274 leaking oil from the drum inner most to the main body , i got onto the Warn site and one on Pirate and found that they run a 30 weight oil without detergent , so being a dummy i ring the Warn dealer in Vic who says that the Himount should run grease ....ah dahhh my isn't leaking grease , but he assures me that the oil is only put in the winch when "bedding in" ....mmmm i don't really believe him and he tells me there is NO seal for the drum to body , sooooo why put oil in the first place i ask him , if there is no seal ?? he puts me on hold , then tells me he will call me back about it , that was yesterday ??????
Can someone PLEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEEE shed some light on this for me before i chew my own wrists out ! Basically i want to run oil , oil makes more sence than grease .... and i believe that there MUST be a seal in there
I know someone will be able to help me out , then take over from that peanut at Warn !!!!!!! thanks in advance

You need a lower housing service kit. There is an O-ring on the drum along with the two bushes that the drum runs on. This usually leaks because of wear in the bushes and drum flexing, wearing the O Ring. The other causeis bullbar flex under winch load. This is why I run a thicker plate section and reinforcements in the bullbar.

It does use gear oil 30W 200ml only. As a Warn Dealer i am pretty upset at this other dealers response but I geuss that is why I get warranty work to do from other dealers.

I am away in the States for a couple of weeks but Hobbsy should have the kit in stock or can get it same day for you.

I just rebuilt my 8274 and got a lower service housing kit for around $45 or so from Ateco in Vic. I hear they all leak though after a while.

And yep its 200ml of 30wt oil.
